Hi everyone !

Nice to be on pomsinoz forum. I hope its also for people outside britain.

My name is Henk and I am from the Netherlands. This year I am planning to migrate to Oz as a skilled migrant. I hope everyone goes smooth as planned. I shall keep on posting updates on this forum and love to get some advice if needed.

I shall be migrating together with my wife and we have planned to move to melbourne, I would love to hear more if thats a good choice.

Cheers!

Henk

Thanks for your welcoming message Calx,

At the moment I am gathering all the documents which are needed for skill assessment, meanwhile I found out that I need 'academic' IELTS and not 'general training' one (which I had passed already). I read that academic is required in many posts on this forum. Joining this forum earlier could save me an extra IELTS test :) , but its never too late and retaking this exam can improve my english more.

Hi Henk.

welcome aboard.

I'm British, but my wife is Dutch and I lived there for 21 years myself in Delft, Den Haag, monster & Naaldwijk so know Zoetermeer quite well.

You will find plenty of info on both visa applications and Melbourne. On Poms in Oz forum there are a couple of Dutch members as well, and you might want to check out http://xpdite.net/forum/ which is a Dutch forum for people heading to Australia.

The Dutch community is very prominent in Melbourne and just a couple of weeks ago we were at the "Oranjefeest" in the city. Ourselves, we live in a small town on the edge of Melbourne called Monbulk which has a very large Dutch population because of its micro climate is ideal for growing flowers & plants.

good luck with you application, and any questions feel free to ask.

Groetjes

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your kind reply to my post.

Interesting to know that you've lived in the Netherlands. My wife was born in Poeldijk which is a part of Monster I believe. You'll be very familiar with the typical landscape of this region full of greenhouses :)

I went to the xpdite forum, they have very interesting posts, specially lists of things to do before leaving the Netherlands, as my wife loves to make lists of everything :) .

Pomsinoz site seems to have a massive community with very active users which makes it also nice to use.

Good to hear that there is a prominent Dutch community in Melbourn. Sometimes, it's hard to convince our family with very good reasons to move to Australia. Our arguments are mostly like, the weather is so nice there and we'll have plenty of nature and room there.

I am curious which other reasons are there for Dutch people to move to Australia.

Additionally, the visa requirements, process and costs are overwhelming, is it really worth moving.

Our response is generally, if you'll not do it, you will never know if it is worth doing :)

I would love to hear what others think about it.

Groetjes and Thanks

Most of my wife's family live and work in and around poeldijk. (Bloemen kwekers) I worked in the flower auctions and still work in flowers so I know what you mean.

When we moved 7 years ago my boys where 9 & 12 and didn't speak English (always Dutch at home) and were talking English in just a few weeks. The eldest still has no problems with his Dutch but the youngest prefers to talk English now and speaks Japanese almost as good as Dutch now.

Australia is a massive change from holland, especially when comparing with where you are living now, but if you decide to live in Melbourne itself, it is still a big city with the same kind of issues (but not anywhere near as bad)

We live in the hills and it is a small community spirit, small schools with 100/120 kids max, and everybody knows everybody else (sometimes good, sometimes not so good ?)

Last week was cold and miserable with lots of rain, for the next week at least (late autumn) it should hopefully be 20+ every day.

It can get very hot and dry in the summer (40+ is not unusual) but generally the summers are very similar to the Mediterranean temps with a few heavy storms and rainfall thrown in for fun.

The lifestyle here is very laid back with a great leisure lifestyle but long working days and hard work are not unusual.

I loved it from day 1, and although my wife took a bit longer to adjust, we have never really looked back. We still love holland, but now only as a holiday destination to see friends and family.

Hi,

welcome to the forum.

Many migrants from the Netherlands came to Australia in the past, there is a Dutch Club in Melbourne and they socialise a lot and enriched Australia with their skills.

This forum has members from all over the world, we came from Germany over 2 years ago and never looked back.

Good luck to you on your journey becoming a migrant.
