Hi Dave and welcome to the forum.

No idea where's good for your type of job, but we are heading to Brisbane in September, also on a 189 visa.

Good luck! This forum has been a godsend for us with loads of useful advice.

Hi Dave and welcome to PIO. When we started looking years ago the places where there weremost vvacancies for CNC machinists were. Henderson in Perth, Newcastle in NSW and Melbourne sorry can't remember exactly where. There were vacancies in Brisbane but not as many.

Thankyou again for your replies. Ive never visited oz before, are there any job sites that people would advise? I was going to find companies and email a cv etc but not sure if this is the correct route to go as far as seeking employment?

That is exactly what we did. We basically emailed machine shops or sent them a message through their website .Make sure you tell them you have PR and when your intended arrival date is. My Husband had two job offers doing it that way before we even landed. This was 4 years ago.

How do people decide? Good question, here are my thoughts on the matter.

For most people, the availability of work is, and should be, the key factor. For us there was only one option, Sydney, due to the very specialist nature of my OH's occupation. So that is the first thing to consider and obviously some occupations are a lot more portable than others.

After that, I think cost of living or to be more precise cost of housing has to come into it. Unfortunately for us, housing is super expensive in Sydney and we are still renting after four years! I spend a lot of time looking at house prices and if we had our incomes in one of the other states, I think we would have bought a couple of years ago. So if your occupation does turn out to be portable, cost of housing might be something you would factor in. I am not sure that other living costs vary too much, but might be a touch higher in say Perth compared to Sydney due to the remoteness.

Then maybe climate can be used to narrow down the options. For example Queensland, Northern Territory have beautiful winters but for much of the year are very humid and can be wet and uncomfortable. Tasmania has the temperate / mildest climate.

Other than that, do you have any gut feelings for any of the states?

Thankyou for the advice and information, the bit about work makes sense. I want to try and locate myself in an area where there are a lot of jobs advertised. I've never been to Australia so can only go off what I've heard, Perth is my favourite choice but I'm really open to living anywhere as being happy in my work means a lot so I want to find the right job. Are there any sites people would recommend for job searching? I've Googled a few and found some companies but obviously I'd like to apply for as many as possible :)

Try http://www.seek.com.au

I think Perth is one of the more polarising choices, in that people tend to either love it or hate it. It was never considered by us (even before we discovered about my OH career options) as we think it is too isolated from the rest of the country, we like the east coast as it is nice easy access to so many other places to visit, Perth is a long way from anywhere.

Yeah I've been told it's rather isolated. I don't think I realise just how big oz is! Cheers for the link, i'm looking Melbourne too it seems nice and it appears to have a good amount of jobs available in my skill

im looking at perth more now as its becoming more appealing. ive applied for a good few jobs through various sites but not heard anything. i see that alot of jobs dont want people out of australia applying which i can understand. im handing in my notice at work soon and im looking to book flights for mid september flying out to perth. Does anyone have any advice for me on what i should be doing next? contacting companies direct via email? or just sticking to job websites? id obviously really like to secure a job before i leave england.
