We are looking at progressing our path towards Citizenship. We are currently here on my wifes 457 visa, she is a GP already working here in Australia and I am a engineer. I'm guessing that we should be going for a 189 visa but we are wanting to check that this is the correct path, as far as we can see she has 90 points and I have 65. Hi From the Rail, It's not possible to be definitive without knowing all the details, but I would personally look to go through the Independent 189 Visa route with your wife as the main applicant. She's nominating an occupation that will always be in high demand, you wouldn't be reliant on any employer and it's comparable with other PR options in terms of timeframe and costs. I would offer a word of caution that 90 points is very high so there must be a miscalculation somewhere, but she'd only need 60 points to be eligible for an invite anyway. Current DIBP 189 application fees are $3,520 for the main applicant, $1,760 for the secondary applicant. Good luck, 30 25-32 20 IELTS 8 (not completed) but English is our only and main language 10 working for 7 years 4 months continuous 20 Doctorate 5 FRACGP (possibly counting) 5 Partner skills ---- 90 or 70 without the English test if its not needed. We were thinking about the 189 visa as it allows us to be flexible in the future and not having any requirements to one employer or state, it seemed the best option. I would also recommend the 189, but take care not to overestimate points. I don't believe doctors normally have a doctorate, that is a phd. So I think she would get 15 for her medicine degree (unless she has indeed done a phd). I have no idea what you mean by FRACGP and there is absolutely no point in claiming for partner skills, a lot of hassle when you don't need the points. Am obliged to work for nsw health for 2 years no problems I think as can work anywhere in health if I wanted to leave my job as a nurse educator.. As Rupert has mentioned above it's often not worth counting the partner skills as it involves the partner taking a skills assessment and IELTS. It's only really done as a last resort. A doctorate also refers to a PHD and sometimes need an extra paid assessment to claim points. Without looking into it I don't know if the FRACGP will count towards the Australian study requirement to obtain those points. It's very likely that those points will not be needed anyway. Just reaching 60 points pretty much guarantees her an invitation in that occupation so there's no need in adding extra work and expense. In general with the Skillselect system it is better to be conservative and only claim points for items you are 100% sure you can prove. 189 would be my first choice and medicals/police have a 12 month validity.
