Salary Packaging in private companies

So, from a little research (ok, a quick google) I see that:

 

 

 

  • Public Benevolent Institutions (PBI)
  • Public and Private Hospitals
  • Health Promotion Charities (HPC)

 

 

Benefit from salary packaging for things such as: Car lease, laptop, mortgage etc.

 

I wondered, from private companies who are not part of the above list, are there any other tax-efficient 'salary packaging' schemes or is it just the above??

Private companies can 'salary package' whatever they want - however they have to pay fringe benefits tax on anything that they provide tax-free to their employees (obviously so the ATO doesn't miss out) so it's not really cost effective for them to do it. Some companies do offer some tax-free perks and pay the FBT, of course.

 

Hospitals and charities, being non-profit-making organisations, have different tax arrangements and can legitimately offer employees much more in the way of tax-free perks. Charities do it to make up for the lower salaries they pay.

Lots of companies offer salary packaging with many people using it for cars and additional superannuation.

 

I think I understand. My wife is still at the negotiation phase and its a rather large telecoms company so perhaps there's scope to negotiate some benefits.
