Hi
First time on here (on any forum actually). I just wanted to ask if anyone has problems with allergies / cough to privet hedge? Or can anyone just tell me how much privet is there on the Sunshine Coast in an urban area? Is it more or less than say my street which probably has privet hedge in the front garden of 1 in 4 homes and lots of privet on country lanes.
Thanks for all your help.

Unlikely you'll see much.

Privet is classed as a noxious weed in most of Australia so people don't plant it nowadays.

There might be some in older gardens.

Thats great news thanks. I read about it being banned but naturalised and thought it might be growing wild everywhere!

You can get an injection to prevent hay fever ... It can be done once a year if you need it ... I used to get hay fever very badly in the UK but seem to grow out of it . But I have only been here a few weeks and it is really bad . Getting the injection next week .

I'm the opposite. Used to get it in the UK and since being here i've only had very mild symptoms on a few days

What's the name of the injection? Or the active substance? I am also allergy prone.

Kenalog injection, it's usually only given if symptoms are severe and other meds have tried and failed in given a desired effect.

This injection is only used for severe pollen allergies & people who also suffer with asthma.

i was on kenalog injections but my old doctor in the UK said they have been banned in the UK because it can give you a heart attack. I found they did work so i was never convinced they were banned. I suspect he just didnt want to give it to me. My hay fever is pretty good here and I only need a squirt of nasal spray on bad days...the same stuff that never worked in the UK.

Alot of GPs don't do them, they prefer to refer to allergy specialist.

We don't do them where I work.

Thank you for all your help. What a friendly bunch...! Privet is just stopping flowering in the uk so I am going to be happier now. We have been thinking about moving down under for 15 years and are closer to a decision than ever but if privet was everywhere I honestly think it would be the deciding factor. Thanks again :-)

Thanks practicenurse. I became allergic some 10 years ago when I moved some really old (and dusty) books from one house to another. I've never been to a specialist - too expensive where I live. (I ought to go, I have some money put aside now.) Back in the days it was really bad, runny nose, and then watery eyes, it was killing me. Tried a couple of medicine, nasal spray and found that the following helped me:

Telfast 120 (pills): Fexofenadine chloral hydrate https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fexofenadine (produced by Aventis)

Aldecin: nasal spray, Beclometasone dipropionate (produced by Schering-Plough)

Around 2007-08 I told myself (my brain to be more precise) that enough is enough and since then I've been much, much better.

I hope other people will share their experience and that everybody will be okay in Australia.
