Hi guys

Does anybody know much about or have they had a 457 visa? I have had a basic assessment and the agent has suggested this visa as my hubbie has no formal qualifications.

Hi The Copelands,

We are in the same situation as I have no formal qualifications that are required for my position as a Sales & Marketing Manager and track records count for nothing over there. From my own personal experience there are two options, 1) email your CV to the recruitment companies in Oz who specialise in your field 2) email all the companies you can find on yellowpages.com.au and email them directly.

I did both and found that agencies don't want to know unless you have a Visa so it's a bit catch 22, so I then emailed companies direct and got one offer of sponsorship which I am awaiting advice from Go Matilda on how to take this forwards. I think State sponsorship is another option but I believe you may still need a Skills Assesment for this??

Hope this helps, there are no quick and easy routes it would seem in your position you need to make it happen yourself!

Good luck

what type of work are you in? My hubbie is in civil engineering (no formal qual but tons of experience) and he got sponsorship through GHD and they are looking Aussie wide for people. Try Hays Recruitment over here as they were on PIO the other day listing jobs that they were looking to fill. The quickest route for 457 is to find a sponsor who is already registered with Immigration as they know the process already and don't have to be assessed as well.

Hi

My hubby runs his own double-glazing company. It's so tricky as his occupation is not on any of the lists and he has no formal qualifications as he learnt his trade on the job. His trade is very simular to the home improvements installer I have seen on one list.

Take care

can you come via the business route - owning your own business and transferring it down to Oz - can't remember the name of the visa but we met people on the plane here and they did that and were setting up their company again in Australia.

I came over three years ago and it means that you are only a temp aussie resident. You can apply for PR later. You are also tied to your employer for 2 years. If something happens, you are fired, you leave....then you have 1 month to locate a new employer who will sponsor you otherwise it is back to Blighty!

People say it is the "risky visa". I was lucky being an RN. I was sponsored by a nursing agency and placed at a local nursing home to where I was living. That home "bought me out" of my contract with the agency and took over the sponsorship! Im still there three years on so proof that the risky visa works!

Sorry but this is not true the employer has to be assesed for each person they nominate to sponsor whether they have previouse sponsors or not unless at a previous application they were accepted for say 3 persons of the same job title

The 1st company went bust so visa was cancelled and the 2nd company didnt know how to treat its employees and couldnt run a bath let alone a company so i looked elsewhere for a better company.I would like to point out that if you leave a sponsor or they sack you that you have 28 days in which to find a new sponsor and lodge a new application or leave australia.Once the paperwork has been lodged you have a automatic bridging visa which allows you to stay but not to work. This process takes approx 12 wks

Until reading your threads, I hadn't realised how nerve wracking that visa could be and what a lot of pressure you're under if the company goes bust etc., and that 28 days isn't a long time to sort something out that has such a huge impact on your life.
