Polkey
Hi All, can any one tell me what they mean by award wages? some of the jobs advertised offer award wages which is putting me off applying for them. Cheers.

Guest fatpom
Award wages are state awards and conditions for your industry sector. They're not part of WorkChoices (although a WorkChoice contract could simply invoke a State Award I suupose?). WorkChoices replaced the award system but are now on death row awaiting final sentence due to the last commonwealth gov losing the election pretty much on the basis of WorkChoices. Many people are still on Award systems. Most people in my industry sector are paid above award but not by that much at trade level (except mining related perhaps?), other sectors may be able to keep to it? Its not really a minimum wage in that grades are paid according to experience and qualifications right up to professional and para-professional levels. In my sector its the working conditions such as mandatory employer enforced overtime hours etc are what count more than money. Check out your award via the State Gov (not commonwealth) web site.
