Hi to all.

Can anyone help me, i'm abit confused with the whole tax thing when buying a car.

I understand that you have to pay a tax when buying a car, think this is 2%. Is this payable to the government?

Do you only pay this on new cars?

Do you only pay this when buying from a dealer?

Do you pay this if you're buying a car privately?

any info would be a great help.:goofy::goofy:

Hi Eddie/Tina

We are going car hunting this morning (well will prob be whole weekend, I've never seen so many car showrooms!) so I'll let you know about the tax thing later.

We spoke to a Toyota dealer last week and (I think) the stamp duty is included in the price of a new car but not a used car, making the difference between the cost even less!

Not sure really, I'll find out though.

Hiya

You will pay Stamp Duty on ANY car purchase.

If bought new or secondhand from a dealer it is not included in the basic price but in the "On road costs" which tend to be quoted on top of the basic price.

If buying privately you do not pay the duty up front - you will receive and invoice from licensing later.

Have a look at this site..............

How much stamp duty will you pay? | on-going-costs | carsguide.com.au

Can't avoid taxes I'm afraid.

It suprised me when I found out you pay road tax on trailers.

Thanks for that Tyke. I've just looked at this site, and yeah i'm definitely paying 2% on top of car price.

It didn't say anything about trailers on that site. We're thinking of buying a camping trailer, would this be subject to 2% also?

Thanks for your info.

Cheers

Sorry, didnt mean you didnt pay them on new cars just that the price the dealer gave us included it.

Will know more later (I hope).

No - on trailers and campervans there does not seem to be any tax:)

I never paid any for mine:wub:
