Clare Brookes
Hi There We have recently arrived in Canberra from the UK and are in the process of renting a property. We need to set up broadband, mobile phones and TV providers. Can anyone advise on the best available offers and/or packages please? Many thanks Clare B
Slean Wolfhead
It's a minefield.....I'll start you off, others will join in ! A lot depends where you're going to be living...newer North neighbourhoods have fibre optic cable right into the home via Transact only, no copper phonelines anywhere. Blistering fast delivery from one supplier only, then you choose an ISP to manage the service (a bit like having a BT phone line then choosing your ISP to deliver the service). Elsewhere, Transact also do normal cable in some areas (like Virginmedia in the UK...cable in the street, then copper up the path to a cable modem in the house). Transact have a postcode checker, if you know it yet. Otherwise, it's Telstra phoneline rental and then an ISP to deliver ADSL to a modem. For mobiles, Telstra have the best coverage but are most expensive, but they have a very fast 4G network which the UK doesn't have yet. Again, some areas are better than others for coverage. Other mobiles providers are Optus, Virgin, Vodafone (who are not the same as Vodafone UK for quality of service...) TV Providers is Foxtel (Sky) via satellite. Always offers on... Thanks for the advice - property we are looking at has a TransACT point and a Telstra point, so hopefullywe are on way to sorting this out!! Just steer clear of Bigpond as an ISP, they come last in reviews
BENS0N
For mobiles i have got on a sim only plan (to put into my iphone) with OPTUS for $30 a month pay as you go. It provides 150 minutes worth of calls including to any UK number (including 0845 numbers and mobiles), unlimited australian texts, unlimited optus to optus mobile calls and 500mb of data. Personally think it is an amazing deal.
