Its interesting to hear that although we don't gain the title immediately, we still have a shot at the salary, with a bit of luck of luck of course! After the day I have had, agreed, hard workers! Haha! But seriously what is "daylight saving?" Also are you there on a working visa or a migrant? Daylight saving in Australia is the same as British summertime when the clocks go forward so that you get longer daylight hours in the summer. NSW, VIC and SA all do daylight saving so that they get long summer evenings. In Qld we don't have it so in the summer here it is dark by between 7 and 7.30pm. In the winter it is dark by 6pm. Apparently the reason we don't have daylight saving in Qld is that the cows won't know what time to be milked and the extra sun will fade the curtains.... I am now on a partner PR visa but I came here on a Visa 457 (Temporary). Although my husband and kids are Australian/UK dual nationals, it was just so much quicker to come out on an employer sponsored visa and my employers needed me sooner rather than later as our energy and resources group is very busy. It takes ages to get a partner visa (mine took nearly 12 months and I only got it then because my husband contacted the local MP who intervened). After having the form for about a year, yesterday I printed off the WA Law Soc admission assessment form - and read it! You can't rush these things. Now just need to fill it in - this may take me a while as I'd rather do anything else that this, especially as I need to update my CV, to be honest I'd rather clean the cooker! I'm a bit concerned though as (having now read it) it all seems a touch too straight forward. I just have to complete some standard boxes - name, address, qualificaitons, where I've worked and attach a CV. Either the WA process is more straight forward that other states or I'm missing something..... Also there's a suspicious question that I don't know whether its a good or a bad thing. Its - "do you have more than 7 years experience?" I do, I've got 10 (12 if you count my training contract). Does that mean I'll get an easy ride as they'll acknowledge that I've been doing this for a while so probably know what I'm doing or will they think I'm a fossil that needs to go back to school to learn what the new kids are learning...... I'll let you all know how I get on as/when I submit it. My own personal deadline is end of Sept to complete/submit so you may not hear from me for a short time. I know what you mean about tedious. Try submitting a partner visa application..... :arghh: I've no idea what the magic is with the 7 years experience. I was assessed by the LPBWA and had to submit certified copies of all my transcripts as well as copies of the course outlines for the GDL/LPC from the College of Law, copies of admission certificate, copy of practising certificates, etc. In addition, I did a document that demonstrated what I did to qualify for the various academic and PLT exemptions. It ended up being quite a packet of information. I went to uni to do the academic portion with a criminal law solicitor who had been practising for donkeys years and he still had to do Corps, Constitution, Administrative Law as well as several other units. I found my job by responding to a recruitment agent's advert in The Lawyer which said that there were lots of energy and resources jobs in Brisbane. As my husband is from Brisbane, I thought I would enquire but didn't tell him as I didn't want to raise his hopes of a return home. I only told him when I had interviews lined up! I let the agent submit my CV to four firms that looked like they would be a fit and I had interviews with 3. I am not too up on the job market in Melbourne. I think if you have skills they want then you'll find a job. There seem to be a lot of opportunities in Perth. Brisbane is a tad quieter at the moment as a lot of mining M&As are on hold due to worries that the mining boom is at an end. I would definitely try a couple of agencies as, if nothing else, they can give you inside information on the job market and salary bands. My agent gave me a list of the all the firms that they could approach on my behalf and a good overview of the energy and resources practice in each firm with details of the key individuals and their specialisms. abeer Posted September 6, 2012 Share Posted September 6, 2012 hello Loopylu, thanks for your reply. yeah i am looking to apply on basis of my police experience but i have recently been informed by my immigration lawyer here that although the POLICE OFFICER 441312 position is listed in the CSOL 2012 but none of the states are sponsoring this profession, and this implies to me directly as although i l get my qualifications and job experience to be successfully assessed by the VATASSESS but no state will sponsor me for immigration. so the entire exercise will be futile. and now my lawyer is looking at other prospects, maybe to apply on solicitor basis. now i have my doubts on his statement and information, as i checked the ceiling for POLICE OFFICER 441312 profession on http://www.immi.gov.au and it was stated to be 3000, the same number is also for solicitor. this question has been bothering me a lot, that if a position POLICE OFFICER 441312 is listed in CSOL, than that means that a person who fulfills the criteria of this position can apply, and should get immigration irrespective of the fact whether there are actual jobs available in that field or not, because this is the requirement for immigration not for the job. hence state sponsorship does not make any sense to me at all. if there are 3000 positions for this post than some state ought to be sponsoring the darn thing. i also found out that there is a recruitment drive taking place in WA, but i am late for it as it is happening this month, and yes i know Pakies and Indians tend to go for odd jobs and the reactions of the natives is predictable, i understand that and there sentiments. i checked the VATASSESS criteria for solicitor, and i saw that i l have to repeat few courses in order to make the ausies recognize my degree. i have no issues on that, i will also have to to a Graduate Diploma in law, after that i l be eligible to apply for any sort of work in legal profession and i can do a further LPC studies to come to equal footings of international standards. and yes pakistan is a common law country, we have the same procedures as we were under the british rule. i know this path is hard and difficult but its going to be worth it. i would love to live a free life. Hi Abeer It sounds like you have done alot of the research into what you need to do. It also sounds like you have your work cut out for you but if you are determined I am sure you'll succeed. Out of interest, what do you mean by "I would love to live a free life"? I know that the political regime in Pakistan is unstable and that there is a lot of violence, especially in Kashmir, on the borders with Afghanistan and directed towards minority religions (eg Christians) but does this mean that you are not free? boganbear Posted September 6, 2012 Share Posted September 6, 2012 It would be inappropriate for me to promote or denigrate any gossip about firms given who I now work for but I have found the ones I have worked for to be pretty good and whilst I appreciate that you have done your role for a very long time, the law and legislative process and resources are different to the UK, so you do need to get requalified. I know Aussies are very hot on it and some of it is a way to keep people out but most of it is fairly similar to the UK but there are significant differences. I used to deal with an English lawyer who found legal research in Oz very difficult when in fact it is much easier in my opinion. It's complex, I had to contact my university for a full transcript as well as the LPC modules. The senior partner is unaware of my plans of emigration so I am treading carefully at the moment, I don't think he will be happy to give me a reference! Oops! I've got my certificates and my grade transcripts but have no idea what topics I studied when sitting criminal law (for example), especially as I haven't studied (or worked) in criminal law since the moment I stepped out of the exam room. Also, found out that subjects studied at LPC won't count. This isn't great for me as I did CPE not a law degree so half of my legal academic studies have been wiped out as not applicable. I'm getting the feeling that I might be studying for quite a while at this rate - oh well, no one ever said it was going to be easy!! I fear I may have to do the same, if you check my earlier post just now you'll see I've found the tricky part of the form! How many subjects did you have to sit and how long did it take you? I think I'll be lucky if I get away with even half of the 11 required subjects assessed as equivalent, I'm planning on studying part-time (evening classes if possible) so I'm guessing I'm looking at several years...... I can help you with websites for WA but if you're not moving to Perth that won't help you much! In the case of Perth I've been told that the assessment is only valid for 12 months - meaning you have to start studying within that 12 month period for your extra qualifications or have to go through the assessment again. Scots law qualified solicitor and my wife and I with our two sons are keen to make the move to Australia. Reccie trip earlier this year to NSW and VIC and loved it. We have no set area in mind though so thinking about going doing the 189 route skilled general rather than sponsored. The question is really which state to use for the skills assessment when we're not sure where we'll head to? Does it really matter at this stage? Marta Loveguard Posted October 3, 2012 Share Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) **** My OH looked into qualifying in WA, might be slightly different as he wasn't admitted in the UK (did law degree and LPC but not the training contract). The WA Law Society said he had to sit six exams - going back to University, the cost was going to be $13k and then also sit the college of law PLT course, at another cost of $8k. Only then would he be admitted to practice. We decided that this was too much considering we were still paying for the £20k loan for the LPC!
