Roofs have been ripped of buildings and homes in Sydney as wild winds batter the city, forcing evacuations and leaving more than 5,000 without power.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for the city and the NSW coast, with gusts recorded at over 100km/h and wave heights expected to exceed 5m.

The winds hit just before midday, with the strongest gusts battering the CBD, Botany Bay and the Illawarra south of Sydney.

St Paul's Catholic College in Manly, on Sydney's northern beaches, has been evacuated after a roof blew off one of its buildings.

The roof was carried by gale force winds to a car park in the school and is now lying amid broken branches and debris.

Nine News understands 700 students were evacuated from the school and two were slightly injured.

A spokeswoman for the SES said rescue workers had so far responded to 80 calls for assistance along the NSW coast from Sydney down to the Illawarra region.

A tree had landed on a car in Ingleburn in Sydney's south-west but luckily no one was injured.

The majority of call-outs had been for large trees falling on homes, she said.

BOM is urging people to watch out for falling trees and flying debris, tie down loose items around the house and cover those that need to be protected.

It was so so windy that a few leaves got blown off trees, and someone's door got blown shut. Shocking stuff.

Next time we have a Cat 5 up here I'm calling on you for the commentary

On a more serious note, a Japanese tourist had her Hello Kitty umbrella briefly turned inside out.

The glass shade over one of the lamps at the end of my drive was cruelly ripped from the bosom of its family and dashed to pieces against a tree. Goodbye cruel world
