Gethsemene
I am currently here on a WHV and was planning to go down the 457->PR in 2yrs route, however I may qualify for RSMS (I am aware of time constraints) and therefore could go straight to PR. The easier method is probably the status quo 457, but I was wondering what the benifits (other than not needing to reapply) are to getting PR 2 yrs earlier. Quinkla
If you get PR, you don't need to worry about being forced to leave Australia if things in your life go wrong. You are eligible for benefits and medicare; you will find it much easier to get loans, credit, repayment plans, mortgages, etc. You will find it easier to move jobs. You would be eligible for citizenship sooner. Temporary visas suck.
Joebloggs
On a 457 you are only a guest worker really it's not much better than a Working Holiday visa, PR gives you security plus all the benefits mentioned above and Citizenship eliminates the hassle of visa's altogether. pintpot
You would be eligible for citizenship sooner. Doesn't make any difference if you get a PR visa after 2 years on the 457 But I agree with the rest of your points.....and especially that a 457 is only a work permit really and should be seen as such. If your aim is to migrate to Australia because you want to live in Australia (rather than just do one specific job here) then you ought to be looking at the PR visas
Quinkla
Doesn't make any difference if you get a PR visa after 2 years on the 457 It does make a difference if you have already been in Australia for some time on a WHV. Or do WHVs not count towards residency?
