My general rule of thumb is to do police checks before lodging and medicals just after.

As the partner of a NZ citizen, they can apply for a subclass 461 NZ Family Relationship visa. You don’t formally ‘sponsor’ this visa.

On the first point, wouldn't having an Australian spouse or long-term partner and a plan to return to Australia be sufficient ties in itself to obtain an RRV?
Generally, yes. My point was more generic on time in Australia rather than specific to the OP’s situation.

What you declare on the application form won’t affect what appears on the certificate.

Making additional trips here isn't really going to make any difference to the strength of your ties with Australia …
I disagree on the first point … Departmental policy does advise that spending decent amounts of time in Australia can count as a substantial tie.
for the second point - it’s ‘will’ not ‘more than likely’. This is written into the regulations and there is no discretion for the decision maker … in most applications that meet the residence requirement the 5 year RRV is autogranted by the computer.- 1

which means it will take months to get a decision
Actually it’s only taking a few days to a week or so for these types of application to be processed at the moment.
The OP should be fine, but it may be worth a short professional consultation to ensure everything is properly understood and the application is properly structured.

Interesting… can you point me to the cases?

As long as you are not claiming points for him you should be fine - but obviously I have not seen all the details.

If he makes the BV application now, and it doesn't come through before his WHV expires, will he be in trouble?
There are too many moving parts here to properly discuss this in a forum post.

He is a former PR visa holder.
Can anyone advise whether you need to apply for a bridging visa or is it automatic if decision on visa application has not been reached yet? TIA
For an RRV application, you need to make a separate BV application.

Queensland is a huge state though, some of it dry red dirt, some lush rainforest. I guess it depends where the designated areas for this visa are…..
Everywhere other than metro Brisbane … so even the Gold Coast is ‘regional’.

The official statements (and some of the lower rent migration agents - not the good ones) make it seem like 65 points is a ticket to the land in the sun
To be fair to my lower rent colleagues, there were plenty of invites at 65 points in teaching professions at the last 189 invitation round in May.

Hi,
My family and I applied for the EOI on the 4th August, claiming 65 points - I am a teacher. We have still to hear anything back. I was wondering why it would be taking so long? Has anyone else heard anything back or what is the timeframe for the EOI. Any help would be gratefully recieved.
Louise
There hasn’t been a 189 invitation round since then. Have you also included a 190 in your EOI, as that would make sense.

Maybe @Paulhand could clarify whether such a waiver still exists?
Yes … but it’s not a blanket waiver, it just lowers the bar.

Some of the medical questions are phrased “have you ever…?”, others are “do you have …?” - it’s pretty clear which ones require full disclosure of any previous condition/issues.

You should look at an RRV before starting a whole new 189 application.

The OP's application for an RRV was refused. With a bit of luck the son will be fine?
Ok … in this context:
Former Australian Permanent Resident = former holder of a permanent visa.

Can you even get a resident return visa when you were never a resident in the first place?
Sounds unlikely to me.

I’d recommend getting some professional help with this to ensure that you address all the requirements.

It’s $465 to apply and unless he does, he’ll never know. It might be a long shot, but if his job offer is solid (and can be made more permanent) then I would certainly give it a shot. Compelling circumstances may be explainable as he was a minor, but quite a lot of time has passed since then.

I will soon be applying for a partner visa and if granted it gives 5 years to make the physical move, but out of interest what reasoning is behind having to make the trip to Australia within the first 12 months to activate the visa? It seems an odd rule and just involves added expense for the applicant?
The rationale is that medicals and police checks ‘expire’ after a year. Prior to Covid the first entry date was 12 months after the date of the earlier of these checks. They changed this to a blanket 12 months from grant during Covid and haven’t changed it back. Until you make a first entry to Australia on a visa you are open to it being cancelled if your circumstances change in a way that would have precluded the original grant (e.g. medical reasons).

Which is a “yes” to the cancer question then. They will decide whether it is of concern to them.

Basically yes, and unless you're advised otherwise by an RMA I wouldn't mention anything about the suicide attempt - it's not a medical condition anyway.
Another question is:
” Do you suffer, or have you ever suffered, from mental health problems?”

I use NordVPN because it always works (sometimes a little slowly) and their interface is seamless, but I'm sure there are plenty of other good ones out there too.
Witopia are good and have specific US streaming VPN connections.
