Thanks for the advice. I can just see this all being a nightmare On the on hand I want to put off applying to make it fit the plans we want better. But at the same time with my current job I can have no contact with the outside world for 3 months at a time. Nightmare. It will all be worth it in the end.

Well I was under the impression that to get a partner visa you had to live together. Only seeing each other for about 2 months a year was not going to be enough or so I was lead to believe.

Thank you very informative. Sorry if this question sounds dumb but is there any part of the process where me and my girlfriend will have to go to the embassy together? As she lives in NSW and i live here we would need to plan and factor that in. Sorry about all the questions this is just the first place I have found where I have been able to actually ask these questions.

What is the process involved in getting a driving licence when I arrive? Somebody told me that as I am coming from the UK it would just transfer automatically and no need for a test. But that does not seem likely to me. I hold a Full UK licence to drive cars and heavy good vehicles. I imagine I would need to sit both of the Ozzie tests again (not a problem) Also if it makes any difference it will be a NSW licence.

So let me just get this right if I applied in say July next year and it was granted 7 months later in the January would the 9 months start from the January even though I cant realistically move over until July 15. In that case I would just hold off and apply a few months later.

Well I was mostly after peoples experiences just how smoothly the process ran and timescale. But a few questions I have are can I specify the entry date so I don't loose time on my 9 month period to get married. As im in the military and have to give a years notice so my earliest move over date is going to have no flexibility in it. Also what other costs are associated with gaining the visa? I understand it costs around $2800 for the visa and then after we get married i have to apply for a partner visa at around $1000. But what about medicals etc? And can I do all this through the consulate in Edinburgh rather than the embassy in London?
