  1. Thanks Alan. I have done a little bit more research and discovered there are some ways and means of avoiding CGT. As you know, I have some time yet. cheers Chris
  2. Hi Gary, Having just applied as a parent going out as my kids are out in Oz I have got a couple of answers. This is just based on personal experience, and the research I have done so there is probably others with more detailed knowledge, however this is you 'starter for 10'. Your mum will still be entitled to the British State Pension, however it will be 'frozen' at the amount she is in receipt of when she moves out. There may be discussions to make it indexed link but wouldn't hold my breath waiting. The best visa is the Contributory Parent Visa (143). This is quite expensive, at about £30,000, I think - you can find out the rate from the Aussie immigration website. There is also a bond of about 10000AUD which is held for 10 years, but you do get it back. The turn around time is abut 14 months (my application has just been accepted and that is what I am expecting). There is the Aged Parent Visa, but that is about a 15 year (literally) wait. I think the visa fee helps buy into Medicare. Not sure about the extended visa, but I think she can. You can also get a 143 Temporary Visa, which I gives you time to spread the cost (about 2 years). If you want any more information on this, based on my (fresh) knowledge, such as agents, form filling etc) please feel free to drop me a PM. Hope this helps a bit anyway. cheers Chris
  3. Many thanks all for your advice on this - a tricky issue. By the way, sorry for the poor phrasing, when I said Cashed In, I meant Sold. That's what happens when you speaks bad England like wot I does. I will need to look to professional advice I think. cheers Chris
  4. Good morning one and all, and greetings from a wet, cold and gloomy Southampton - yes it is trenchfoot seasons once more, We have shares in a couple of UK and international firms; our intention has always been to draw on them closer to retirement, when we needed them and in amounts (on a yearly basis) that would avoid the Capital gains tax. We are now in the process of emigrating under a CPV (son and daughter thought they could get away, but little did they know...). We are only at the stage where the application has been accepted, but looking ahead to a successful outcome I am starting to look into all the financial implications. The question is, will we need to transfer our shares to an Oz system or can we still do as we intended - perhaps cash shares in through the UK then transfer through someone like moneycorp to our Oz account or even just cash them in directly in Oz; the main issue would be to not have to pay, or pay as little as possible in capital gains tax or equivalent. Any ideas/answers/messages of general love appreciated. cheers Chris
  5. Very best of luck with it Emma. We have just had our application accepted, and that is exciting enough - and the process hasn't even started. cheers Chris
  6. I was just replying on a general basis, as my one wasn't a partner visa. I did mean to mention that, but glad you did as I wouldn't want Emmie2010 to use one if it is easy to do yourself. cheers Chris
  7. Hi Emmie2010, We are using a migration agent; whilst not cheap, in my opinion they are worth it to make sure everything is right. We are using GoMatilda and they have been great. We applied at very short notice and had to provide our own forms, plus those from my daughter in Perth. Without Alan and his crew we would not have lodged the application on time - as it was he had a whole day and a half to spare! Also GoMatilda comes up in several threads on this forum, all with excellent reviews. cheers Chris
  8. What! You didn't have to send that one in! It took me ages to find mine.
  9. Hi Tilsbury, I did our application through an agent, and we were asked every single bit of paper you could think of, including previous marriage certificate and Decree Absolute. It may have been just a case of crossing t's and dotting i's but it may be worth pre-empting any questions by getting it. I have just had a quick check and this link will take you to details of how to get it (it seems simple, and is probably quite well used!). http://archive.stlucia.gov.lc/faq/acquiring_marriage_certificates.htm cheers, Chris
  10. Very many thanks for getting back to me. They sound just what I need. cheers
  11. Hi Andy, Thanks for getting back to me. The information I will be after will cover transferring pensions, best way of using funds (lump sum), advice on the (means tested) pension I believe I could claim after 10 years. There will probably be other questions as well, but basically all aspects of financial advice to ensure the best transition on emigrating. cheers
  12. HI Ozziepom1963, Very many thanks, and also congratulations to your mum (and you). cheers Chris
  13. Good morning, has anyone used either Montfort International or Prismxpat for financial advice before (or during or after) emigrating? I have been searching for a good company (in UK) and these seem to be quite good. If not, has anyone any other recommendations? cheers.
  14. Very many thanks Bridgeman, that is very clear. I had 1 year and 5 years in my mind from my own research, but not quite managed to 'connect the dots'. This explanation is perfect. Have a great day. cheers.
  15. Morning all, Does anyone know how long after issue of the PVC you have before you have to use it (ie emigrate). cheers
  16. Many thanks - I take your point entirely, and brings it into mind to research it. cheers
  17. Would that apply to a UK pension. I would be looking to work ( I would be pushing 60 by the time we got over there), but also draw two pensions, non-disability related.
  18. That makes a lot of sense. I have obviously tried to research it and I felt that these reasons were part of it. I do find that trying to do research on the official sites is like trying to nail jelly to a wall. There are bits and pieces all over the place, and then it is trying to fit it all together. I could not find anywhere where it was put as clearly as your answer. As I say, it makes a lot of sense and also makes it more attractive. cheers
  19. Does anyone know why the cost of the CPV is as high as it is. Is it just a one-off payment that was set somewhat randomly, or is it based on assumed medical/welfare needs or anything like that. cheers
  20. Very many thanks for your quick reply. I did not realise that it would be quite so expensive as that. A real 'thinking' point. cheers
  21. Hi, My daughter lives in Perth, having got her residency and my son is moving to Brisbane in April 2014, having transferred to the Australian Army (he is given Australian Citizenship, I believe). I am seriously considering applying for a contributory parent visa, and although it will not be for some time (we have decided that we would wait until my son has been there for a certain amount of time to see if he settles properly) I have started doing my homework into whether we would have a reasonable chance of an application being approved, and also the financial aspect of it, ie could we afford a reasonable quality of life if we moved out there. My questions are: What is the current cost of the PCV? I have tried the visa price estimator and it appear that for me and my wife it would be approximately £2200 at current prices. I thought it would be more than that so would like to check if I am reading it right (a bit of insecurity there!) Back in my wilder, reckless days (which I can just about remember) I was done for Drink and Driving. This was in about 1982 - is it likely this will be held against me? Is there a time criteria from when I can apply. My daughter has her residency for well over a year now, and my son will have his citizenship pretty much on entry. We intend to move to near Brisbane, so does that have any bearing on it? Finally (for this post, anyway) if the visa is approved is there a time limit of when you have to move out? Many thanks cheers
