  1. 12 year Volvo v40 nearly 1500 pound! That's fir me and my husband to drive. i'm trying a few different online ones now and saying UK resident sibpnce birth. I just thought direct line could resurrect an old policy just change the vehicle. I was floored. I live on an island! It's hardly high risk.
  2. Really not sure how you got these cheap deals. I rang direct line, who pulled up my old account from 10'years ago, but still refused yo offer me a no claims bonus and said they would not accept an overseas one. My quote was ridiculously high.
  3. Oh, and if I were to ever return to live in Oz, it would be Tassie!
  4. We moved to Scotland last month. It was a really easy transition. Particularly getting the kids unto schools etc. it is a beautiful and dramatic part of the world. We're on the islands so a bit isolated, but I love it.
  5. My kids are in P7 and s2 in Scotland, they don't qualify for free dinners, but 2 pound a day for a 3 course dinner everyday is do much better than thinking of what yo put in their lunch boxes. I used to give my son nearly $50 a week for his tuck shop in Oz, the prices were quite high.
  6. We also left a financed car in Oz, that we are trying to sell. So interested in this threAd. It's not financed by the car yard so can I not sell it? I don't understand , do long as it's paid out on sale what's the problem?
  7. Nothing is transferred from either country, good or bad credit rating. I had a great credit rating here, mortgage, credit cards etc but 10 years ago. Just ordered a phone connection with BT and because I gave no credit rating here anymore I had to leave a (refundable) deposit.
  8. We've been back roughly the same amount of time. It's been quite easy to set up a new life. Actually much easier than doing things in oz. my husband got a job and started within a week, first application and interview. We bought a car, enrolled kinds in school and got a short term let while looking for something more permanent, we move into a 6 month let next week and in that time we'll decide if the location etc is the tight one for us ( a bit remote, but beautiful) i will admit, I am missing my parents and friends in Australia. We were there 10 years too. Although I have been a citizen fir much longer as my parents took me there as a child. I have always ping ponged back and forth. My husband is German, but feels more comfortable in English speaking countries. Our two children (aged 12 and 11) were both born here but obviously spent most of their lives in Australia. they have settled well, made friends , but my son said he wanted to go back to Oz, which broke my heart. He seems ok,now though. We told him we would stay here because we lost a lot of money in Oz, from a business during the GFC, and just feel really jaded. I know it could of happened here in th UK, but we made a lot here and took it to Oz where it just got eaten up by high commercial rents, tax, utilities etc that are so much more than the UK. I am actually quite bitter and angry as we are virtually starting from scratch again. But ho hum..... Australia us a beautiful country but it us vety isolated, expensive and we just weren't happy. I know I will go back for a holiday but I am happy with our move too.

    DVD's

Most newish dvd's are multi region these days. Sibling as they say region 2/4 you'll be fine.
  10. You'll have to declare and pay duty on the wine. We are moving stuff now, so I can let you know how much the duty us/was as we have 3 cartons in our stuff. We had a restaurant in OZ ,and had some good stuff left.
  11. We just moved back a month ago. My daughter left Australua in grade 5 and started P7 here. I think your child will be p1, which appears very similar to the Qld version of prep, so don't fret about them being behind. The Scottish system is quite different to England, etc. so don't go looking girl answers on an English website as it won't apply. All children in P1-3 get free school dinners, and if you are 3 miles from the school get free bus service too. It it was quite different starting, as in didn't have to buy anything for my children, they were supplied with everything down to pencils and books etc. just had to buy uniform, but it seems every school pretty much wears the same but you may need yo purchase a school jumper. good luck.
  12. My pleasure. We liaised with Bibi at the Brisbane office, she was really helpful.
  13. They were all pretty much the same price as all the others, but I just got a great vibe from Dogtainers and my hunch was right. They really care about the animals.
  14. We moved in July, we used Dogtainers in Brisbane for our dog. Cost was $3200 from Brisbane to. Munich ( we stayed there for a few weeks then drove to Scotland) they did everything, and updated us while we had a few days in Japan on the way. They emailed several times with photos. Service was excellent. Included in the price was 2 days boarding and we paid for 3 more as we had a stop over on the way. Can't recommend them enough.
  15. This makes it all sound very easy, but how can anyone be sure this is a genuine Clydesdale bank website? I am always so sceptical ...so many people get ripped off so easily these days.

    Selling belongings

Gumtree seems to be abit better than garage sales and ebay. No fees for one and genuine buyers ( in my experience) I have had loads of garage sales and get so sick of the' second hand dealers' coming at 4 in the morning and being abusive when you say no entry until 6 or 7am. That's just me though.
  17. i remember that too Quoll. I was living in the UK and sending money back ( I was in my late 20's I think) to Oz because at that point I thought I might buy a house here. In the end though I sent it all back to the UK to end up buying land and building a house in Scotland. We holiday'd in the uk in late 2009 and I think the exchange rate was at about 57p to the $ then and I still thought everything was cheaper in the UK. Food for sure in the supermarkets and clothes. Not petrol obviously , but I still believe that as you drive less miles in the Uk the cheaper petrol over here really doesn't help.
  18. I feel the same this time. I first emigrated as a young child with my parents. I always remember when they went backwards and forwards not ever really wanting to live in OZ. I can't put my finger on why, but as I now have older parents and a brother and his family here its pretty much the only thing that keeps me coming back. If I didn't have family here I would never have come back this time. Can't wait to get all our affairs in order. I don't think Oz is a bad place, but being in business has put a new light on everything for us. Its so very hard to operate , so many regulations and red tape. I am sure its hard in the UK too, but i'm worn out. A change is good as a rest I suppose!
  19. Its all abit ironic really...for us anyway. When we came back over here ( i'm a ping ponger) 8 years ago we did quite well with the exchange rates and we had made abit of money selling our house in Scotland. We made the decision to move back when the exchange rate was really good, but waiting on business to sell and now watching it plummet. Oh well, that's life I suppose. You just have to make the gamble on when to exchange.
  20. no gas and water bill? where did/do you live in Oz that you don't get those bills?
  21. That's what my husband says, We are planning to travel via the states on our way back though, We need a long break after the arduous few years we have had trying to run a small business in this tax heavy, over regulated country. I'm not bitter or angry, just very very tired.
  22. We can't really begin to plan anything yet as we have both a house and a business to sell ( in this market its hard, business been on market for nearly 6 months now) and have to do work to the house before we put that up for sale. So....in answer to your question. We did work to the hosue on our only day off! Very productive though.
  23. Also, I just told them how long I had held a license, they photocopied it and I listed the insurance I had held and how long I had held it for. No mention of % but then I was with RACQ a the time and I had a ' lifetime no claims bonus' which actually let me keep the no claims bonus even if I had to make a claim. ( not sure how that worked but it gave me a good discount)
  24. I did it a long time ago when I was living there ( I think it was 1998 or abit later) you just need your old Australian policy number and the insurers contact details and they will ( they did for me back then) do all the running around and rining to check stuff. It was really easy.
