  1. Husband and I came out in October 2012 and moved to Cairns in June 2013. The oldest son is now a doctor in Alice Springs(he came out in August 2013). We always knew he would come to Australia and he is the reason we decided to come before our visas expired. The younger one who is 21 didnt want to come but didnt want to stay in the UK without his family. In retrospect we shouldnt have come as were happy in Cornwall and lost so much money on the exchange rate.My mum was broken hearted and died just after Christmas, she was ill for a long time and just gave up I think when the boys finally left.
  2. We are in Cairns and my son often does not even get a reply to applications ( he used to work in a bank and has done sales ). He has applied for everything including shops, restaurants, cleaning but nothing. He has friends in Cairns who plan to move elsewhere as they have nothing either. I used to work as a Health Visitor but decided to work as as a support worker but not getting anywhere and had to take a English and Maths test before one interview. My husband is a teacher and always in demand for contracts so that is a relief. I envisage my son will go back to Cornwall where he always had work as he has been here since October and very down and missing life there.
  3. We came just over a year ago and brought over inhalers and medication for both myself and husband. Like the other posts have said no need to bring stuff like analgesia as you can buy it easily and at a reasonable cost here. We also carried scripts from the GP so customs could check(they didnt) but also so that the doctors here could see when we needed repeat prescriptions. The GP kindly prescribed us some extra to take over.
  4. My 25 year old son joined us in August(he had a 1 year RRV). At that time we had been in Australia nearly a year. We had PR and bought a house. He took his passport,E mail from immigration, letter from bank in Aus confirming his address at our house and was not able to get a Medicare card. They questioned us about the last time we were in Aus almost 20 years ago( PR stayed 1 year). Anyway he was asked to go back with Seven Seas invoice to confirm he had moved his stuff over and also had to write a short statement about why he was coming to Aus and what his plans were( he is a doctor). We were quite puzzled as he was legally able to be here.
  5. We went down to the esplanade to help my son who recently took over a ice cream shop. All going well until the staff fell out with each other and walked out! They did come back a bit later thankfully.
  6. Hello and welcome to you both. We have been in Cairns for a few months now and live at Trinity Beach. I did get registered with AHPRA but not keen to do my previous role which was a Health Visitor ( Child and Family Nurse here ) so thinking about looking for work in the aged care sector. My husband does relief teaching. Please feel free to message us although I am not sure if I know how it works! Ann
  7. We came over a year ago as only a few months left on visa and knew eldest son was going to settle here. I will never cease to regret the pain I have caused my mum(87) and knowing her only grandchildren are here in Aus. I constantly think about it and how selfish I have been and will never forgive myself.
  8. A cornish pasty-proper job as they would say in Cornwall!
