Personally if it were me, I would be getting on with my visa application pronto as we never know when they may line up with AHPRA and only accept Degree's, however this is a risk as it could change at any time, just like AHPRA did. Once you have the visa, as long as you do your validation trip you have up to 5 years to get your Diploma upgraded to a Degree and get your AHPRA registration sorted. Good Luck!

As Geordiegirl68 is pointing out, I am a degree registered nurse (well in a few weeks time), the 25% of my course on a diploma have done the same theory and practice hours, the difference in the UK is merely a dissertation (final assignment) and the reason many uk nurses are doing the diploma course is because financially there is more financial assentives from the NHS bursaries/student loans companies which is essential for many mature students that have partners who work, especially if they have children. As a degree level nurse I would not EVER suppose a diploma level nurse was less worthy than me. They have often received far higher grades in assignments (PS we did the same assignments along the way). In fact, what's worse for Australia is my friend moved to Brisbane in December after submitting her AHPRA in October. She is a diploma registered nurse. She has not received registration. She was my mentor last year, and she was one of the most academic and compassionate nurses I have ever had the pleasure to work alongside. Any Australian work force would be lucky to have her. Yet, apparently she is now not good enough. AHPRA have this wrong and they have failed to look at it from the UK nurses perspective. They have blinkers on.

Congratulations Bigmac! Can I just ask are the Diploma registered nurses who have been refused all been general nurses, or are we looking at general, mental health, child and LD? x

I could be wrong but I think Derby Uni did an online top up degree if that helps anyone? I know a few friends on my course are thinking of this option x

OK, I was 4 1/2 hours early for my induction day so I have come home and sent my first EVER tweet on Twitter! I hope our mass tweeting works. For those that don't know how to use Twitter its relatively easy so lets all get on this. I am a degree registered nurse, but I am doing this for my fellow nursing colleagues with Diplomas who I know are equally as well trained as me. I have a friend in Brisbane who submitted in October and can not get registered and she is an amazing nurse who taught me well as a mentor. When you look at how many of us nurses are reading this thread we need more proactiveness to support our nursing colleagues. So everyone, get on Twitter or send as many emails as possible...

Just been looking at the Diploma in Enrolled Nursing programme and they only do 400 hours practice as opposed to the 2800 hours Diploma nurses do in the UK??? How can they compare these?

Can I just ask, for those of you unfortunate enough to be mixed up in all this now... What exactly will a newly qualified nurse be required to send to them? I wanted to get my application in next month (I don't need it for a year but who knows with these guys, especially if I need to pay for it all over again in May) but am baffled now as it seems like they are asking for everything bar my kitchen sink!

This may be me just overthinking things, but would UK Diploma nurses in AUS already registered with AHPRA be ok reapplying in the future? Surely they wouldn't change the criteria for nurses already registered?

I think the refusal letters posted on here mentioned a bridging visa. But that is apparently $10k and needs to be done in Australia? I could be wrong. That's what I am reading, but again very early days. From my interpretation of the letters then post grad courses will be considered but at this stage who knows. Fingers crossed its positive news and they start accepting individuals post grad training. Such a shame they done recognise experience, as a 'soon to be' newly qualified I can clearly state I wouldn't employ me over someone with vast amounts of experience. I know what position I would rather be in, and that would be experienced rather than a degree under my belt.

I think there has been nothing 'official' and it is still early days but we have reports now of a few members being refused, I suppose if replies are now being sent it is currently a waiting game till any of us have any 'official' news or advice from AHPRA, everything else is just speculation. If I was waiting to apply with a Diploma right now, I would be holding off for more news.

Wow some shocking stories on here and I hope for all of you this has all happened for some other better reason, although I am sure that is not easy to see right now. I agree, I think this needs to be taken further. I understand that things change all the time, but for those that gained a positive skills assessment and are now in a receipt of a visa to then be declined puts everything into prospective.

Appalling news and so sorry for everyone this affects. I really hope this doesn't affect Diploma registered nurses who are renewing and already working in Australia. I also wonder how this affects Advanced Diploma nurses. When I applied to uni 3 years ago, I had an offer on a diploma course, an advanced diploma course and a degree course. The level of education was not important to me at all, however for cost of living reasons I chose the uni that offered the Degree. I just wonder how AHPRA are going to determine where the line lies? I wonder if the educational content etc will determine who gets through...

I hope you all get some news soon, even at this point I think the majority of people would even prefer some negative news than no news at all. It just seems ridiculous now that they can carry this malarkey on, changing the goal posts each week. Ceridwyn, as I have said before this is a UK based site 'Poms in Oz' that supports mainly UK based nurses in getting to Australia. This is a thread for us to support each other in our journey in getting our UK nursing qualifications recognised with AHPRA, this is not about the injustice of NMC not recognising your qualifications. All your posts come across as harsh and negative and I feel that they are against the aim of this forum. We have no news as of yet, it may be bad news, it may not be. You quote statements as if you are 'in the loop' and that you have factual evidence, when in fact all you have is hearsay. What you don't realise that moving to Australia is a dream for many of us Brits, and reading your posts may deter people who are perfectly capable of emigrating. The fact is, you do not know. You appear to have nothing positive to share on this thread and I just wonder what your aim of being here is to achieve?

I put in a long and thorough complaint to AHPRA yesterday via email. I doubt anything will come of it but apparently it has been sent to some other department who will get back to me in due course. Iv nothing to lose but I don't like watching an organisation treat so many people like this and not even give an explanation as to what is happening. There was no warning and not even an update to applicants to advise. I'm sorry, but can you ever imagine the NMC being able to do this?

But you'd think the people at the bottle neck end would start drip feeding through if they were still processing, its obvious (kind of) that they haven't processed any since the changes and it makes you wonder how long they can carry on like this? Its going to take years surely to clear this backlog up. Im not even waiting and it is annoying me, I really think they owe it to people to tell them especially when you are paying for a service.

If we as a group (I haven't even submitted yet but never mind) all complain then they may realise that they have to do something. Complaining to AHPRA does not seem to be having an effect. I am wondering if there is anyone good at writing a letter that we can all sign and post addressed to the embassy, or the government. Something that in mass may help identify that there is a problem here? I wouldn't even know where to start with the whole thing, but Id be happy to print off a letter, sign it and post!
