My husband had the same problem - Vetassess just don't recognise the NEBOSH diplomas (even though employers do). We considered staying in the UK and completing a masters degree but didnt want to stay in the UK for that long. In the end our only route in was to get an amployer to sponsor us on a temp 457 visa. We have been here a year now and luckily the company have said they will sponsor him permanent residency. The problem with coming over on a 457 when vetassess dont recognise your qualifications os that you are solely reliant on the company sponsoring PR as you wouldn't be able to do it yourself

Yes, my husband works in this field and these are widely accepted - employers particularly like it if you have a masters degree

My husband gets paid LAFHA - but it is paid by his company, not the government. He works FIFO and lives in a 2 bedroom unit, provided by the company, whilst he is away so the LAFHA is to cover his living expenses (well, most things are paid for so its just food really)

I also have a big spider phobia and considered hypnosis before we came out to Perth. However, we have been in Perth nearly a year now and have hardly seen any. I have seen a few redbacks in the garden but I can just about manage to stamp on them as they are quite small - anything bigger than 2-3cm I can't handle but so far I haven't seen anything bigger than that. One thing I don't like though are the cockroaches - they are huge!!

. Hi, I live in Mindarie which is next to Quinns. Rent is probably a bit low. We pay $120 a month for electric and $75 a month for gas. $100 a month for water (we do have a pool and auto retic which may mean that we use a bit more water and power than someone who doesnt). $105 a month for Foxtel (we have most channels, one movie package and no sport). We spend around $1000 a month on food (add another $500 for alcohol and dining out, etc). Car and contents sounds about right. Also, one major expense is private medical

I didnt realise Darwin was so small actually. I live near Joondalup so know it well. I know what you mean about the beach - it seems a shame to have all these beaches on your doorstep in Darwin and not be able to use them. We love the Perth lifestyle but this job offer seems to good to miss...

Thanks for all your replies - the conditions do sound pretty harsh. I've heard that it is expensive but then so is Perth (not sure how they compare in that respect). I'm also a bit worried about the wild life (mainly the bird eating spiders!)

Hi My husband and I currently live in Perth, however, he has been offered a job in Darwin. Our main concern is the weather as we love the weather in Perth and we love the outdoor lifestyle. Can anyone tell me: does it rain almost constantly in the wet season? How long does the wet season last? Is it relatively dry in the dry season or are there a few wet days? i have looked at average weather conditions on various websites but would like to get a local's perspective We have been to various places in the tropics around the world (also we have been to Port Douglas - not sure if this would be similar) Many thanks

Has anyone lived in rural WA, if so, how bad are they. I dont mind how poisonous they are - its just how big they are that bothers me!! Thanks

Hi, we bought within a month of being here. My husband was on his probation period and it wasn't a problem. We had a mortgage in principle agreed before we got here with Westpac. In the UK, we have moved around a bit and never rent anywhere before we buy to get a feel for the place. However, some people like to do so

Hi My husband has a level 6 NEBOSH diploma and has gained his chartership - he also has around 10 years health and safety experience in a management position, however, he failed vetassess. They advised him that he had a very strong CV and application but he didn't have a Bachelors Degree (even though the level 6 dip is the equivalent of a Bachelors degree in the UK). Vetassess don't seem to think outside the box - I think they just have a tick sheet - very annoying.... We are in Oz now though as my Husband went down the sponsorship route - that seemed to be the only way in and then hope that the employer will sponsor permanent residency after 2 years. Claire

Exactly. It defeats the whole object. He will refuse to come in the office but not sure how they will take it and we are on an employer sponsor visa

I think he could handle taking the odd call and sending the odd email but not to spend any days at the office. One of the guys turned his work mobile off on his R&R and got a right telling off

That is bad - my husband is on quite a good wage but no amount of money is worth working on your week off

Hi My husband has just started doing FIFO - we initially thought we wouldn't go along those lines because being apart would be hard, etc, etc... However, we thought one week off every 3 weeks would be great (he is doing a 2:1 roster). Since starting he has found out that most of the employees work at least one day if not two on their R&R week back at head office (these are the white collar workers). This is the first we have heard about this and wondered whether it was just this company that do it or is it industry wide??? The guys on site seem to think that all companies do this. Does anyone have any experience of this or know of anyone that does? Many thanks Claire

Hi Yes, I have registered with one agency but I havent had any luck getting work with them (they said its been very quiet recently - despite the fact they are still advertising for jobs!). I have sent my CV off to other agencies but never hear anything back. My husband said he would speak to HR at his office to see if they have anything (not ideal - working with my other half but it may come to that!!)
