  1. We used NR and had a terrible time. We paid for sole use of a 20ft but on moving day they turned up with a truck. Said that due to a shortage of 20ft containers that our stuff would be repacked in the depot. We had long delays, well outside the timeframe quoted. After a lot of investigation the shipping agent in Sydney told us that the consignment was in a shared 40ft container. Looks like the delay was our stuff sitting in a 40ft in Cork, waiting on another consignment to full the rest of the container... even though we had paid for a sole use! Lots of phone calls, lots of arguements and no satisfaction. Nasty experience.
  2. 'And I believe that you are liable for tax on the gain made due to the change in exchange rate'. Sorry to butt in on the conversation but does anyone know any more about this? Does that mean that the gain is calculated on the exchange rate from the date you emigrated?
  3. I used An Post to send down emergency stuff while waiting for our shipping - box was sitting in my friends house waiting for us as we arrived. Brilliant! What the guy in the post office told me was make sure the girth of the box (waist?) was no bigger than 3m! Just make sure that it is under 20kgs too, as it can be turned back if it is heavier. For anyone wanting trials and tribulations of shipping company pm me......
  4. Hi bigbadcon, We ended up going with Nat Ross, they did bring down the price a bit, but ours is high because we are going to Newcastle. But they were the cheapest. Apparently the further away from the main centre (Sydney) the higher the price. So far so good, they'll be arriving next week to pack us up. I'll keep you posted as to how we get on.
  5. Yup, both Careline and Nat Ross both came in around 5600 - could be that we're in Waterford! I'm waiting on a quote from Crown in the next couple of days then I'm going to start some hard bargaining, it's great to get the heads up from this forum - it will give us a leg to stand on. Now if we could just manage to sell the car!
  6. One was Nat Ross and we're heading to Newcastle in NSW from Waterford. I've had a few others over 6000. Sounds like I need to do some serious re-negotiation with a couple of these.
  7. Both sound a lot better than the €5,600 I've been quoted - are you going to Perth?
  8. I've been looking at quotes for insurance through independent companies as in - not with the removalist companies..... here's one from http://www.lettonpercival.co.uk/ I've emailed and asked if they cover Ireland to Australia..... 'The rate from Ireland to NSW, Australia is 1.40% plus 6% IPT. Therefore, on a sum insured of £10,000, for example, the premium would calculate to £140 plus £8.40 IPT = £248.40' Anybody else used independent insurers? I checked with all the removalists I've had to quote and they all say it's okay not to go with them. Seems to bring the costs down a bit.
  9. Hey Corkonian, same here - 1.4L Golf is not worth bringing over, but she's a great car and won't sell for peanuts here. I'm going to check with a mate who he used to ship his car and I'll keep you posted - there's a lot of regulations - you need to own the car for 12 months and you have to apply for an import permit which takes time - you would probably be best to go with someone who will do the whole lot for you. As soon as I know more I'll let you know. Thanks Mataba - I've checked the website, but not many 1.4L cars on the road there - Aussies like 1.8L at least. But I spoke to my Aussie friend over the weekend and she's still driving her old Toyota with 200,000k on the clock. If it's a good car they will hold onto it forever! Hope all going well for you over there.
  10. Hi Corkonian - we're in the same boat (sorry, bad pun) trying to sell the car here but no luck and wondering whether to bring it to Oz - from what I've been told it's quite cheap to ship, but the import duties are very expensive in Oz. You could follow this thread, there's lots of info on it. http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/transport-shipping/138727-worth-bringing-my-car-iron-ladys-trusty-new-calculator-reveals-all.html Let me know how you go, we might have to ship too!
  11. Ha! Just got a quote from Pickfords - had been speaking to a Dublin office - quote in £'s for 5,026 - when I queried the '£'s' I was told it was because they were quoting from Belfast! In Euro's that's over €6,200! Pickfords are out!
  12. Ha ha Mataba, had to laugh at you on the blow up bed - hopefully all your stuff arrives soon and in one piece. I've lost too much stuff moving before to loose more moving this time so might just have to stump up the money - agree with you on the costs once you arrive - bonds and rental advances seem huge. Hope the move is going well for you and it warms up soon.
  13. Wow, these quotes are working out a lot more expensive than I thought. Might have to re-evaluate how much we bring. Unfortunately there is a lot of fragile stuff so needs expert packing. Waiting on Pickfords and Crown for next quotes - both NatRoss and Careline were €5600, all for 20' container. Will keep you posted!
  14. Wow, we just got quoted €5,600 for a 20' container - Waterford to Newcastle! Mataba - did you beat them down? Do I need to start hard negotiating with them?

  16. Hi Corkonian, that's great, we'll be renting our house out once we move so we're planning to ship a week or so before we move and live on what we can post down on the last day, An Post have made life easier! If you have any info on shipping can you post in 'shipping from Ireland' too? We'll get as much info going as we can. Good luck with your move too!
  17. I spoke with http://insure-your-move.com/ and they said they provide insurance cover from Ireland - waiting to get quotes so I can start comparing. Lozzchops, haven't heard of any of these so thanks for the heads up, we'll try them too - when are you heading down?
  18. I'd certainly get more than one quote and then try to negotiate down the company you feel most comfortable with if they aren't the cheapest. There's some really good threads here about shipping cars and it might be cheaper to ship the car and the household goods with separate companies. http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/transport-shipping/138727-worth-bringing-my-car-iron-ladys-trusty-new-calculator-reveals-all.html Let us all know how you get on.
  19. Good Luck Bonniem, hope the stress levels stay manageable! I have another couple of months to get organised. I've started a thread 'Shipping From Ireland' so anyone interested please add comments to that. On this thread, I called into my local post office and they confirmed €60 for 20kgs to Oz, €65 if you want it registered. From what he could work out the size is limited to no larger than 1.5m in length and 3m in circumference. I'm thinking of posting stuff to keep us going in rental accommodation while shipping arrives - clothing suitable for work, bedding, campervan kitchen contents (mostly melamine and non breakable). Might make life a little easier once we get there. Either that or lots of bags of Tayto!
  20. Following on from 'postage from Ireland' this thread is for sharing any info you have on shipping from Ireland. We'll be flying 27th August so looking at shipping companies now. I've got Careline coming on the 12th June and Crown on the 21st June and still waiting for Pickford's to return my call. We're shipping from Waterford to Newcastle NSW so I'll post any interesting things I find....... please add if you have any experience shipping from Ireland, or if you're about to....... Let the games begin!
  21. Don't worry about hijacking - it's all relevant - getting stuff to Oz! Maybe we should start a thread about shipping from Ireland and get everyone to post their findings and share the information?
  22. Hi, we're moving to Newcastle at the end of August, if anyone has any hints on job hunting and work prospects I'd love to hear them!
  23. Hi karlom, Snap, moving to Sydney from Waterford on 27th August - good luck with the move! We're in the process of talking to Crown, Careline and Pickfords at the moment - will keep you posted on what we find, let us know how you get on.
  24. Excellent news - will be sending in August so! As a matter of interest have you used a shipping company as well?
