Good post Bibbs. Sounds similar to us socially, we have no kids either.
Needed saying that, it's not correct at all when people say there is nothing going on or nothing to do.

She probably won't be so smug when he gets round to kicking her head in.

Asda is atrocious. There was a Morrissons near us and that was even worse.
The food in Asda doesn't taste of anything.

There are about 200,000 Poms in Perth who, I suspect, like it.
There are about 6 posters on here who don't.
Its not representative, they just shout loudly.

Can’t relate directly to the teenager issue but something said in here rang a bell. The whole social media thing, keeping bang up to date with news and events from the UK etc. can be a hindrance to settling I reckon.
One of my sisters-in-law is never off Facebook, knows every move her friends are making back in the UK, is never off the Liverpool Echo website, knows more about what’s going on in Liverpool than Perth … I could go on for hours. The upshot of all this is that she has never really settled in Australia. And she's 30-odd, not 13.
IMO, part of the reason is that, she hasn’t moved for herself, she moved for her husband and family; and they are all chuffed to bits living over here, but she isn’t.
So, maybe some parallels there but, yeah, the social media stuff can get too much sometimes I reckon. Great when you need it but, if it wasn’t there, she probably would have got on with her life over here a bit better.

Buying an investment property is old news.
What you want to do is find an older place on a big block, knock it down and duplex it. Much better returns.
Not that I'd know, I don't do this sort of thing, just know a couple of (loaded) people who do.

Fifo?
in Aussie Chat
My brother-in-law did it for 1 or 2 shifts, then packed in. For the hours you do, in the conditions you work in, with the sacrifices you make, doesn't sound worth it to me. The money's not that good all things considered.

I tipped a girl in the pub on our 2nd day here and she looked at me like I was a sex criminal. So, I haven't tipped anyone since.

To any newer members, if you're looking for any advice, general tips on anything, just do the opposite of what dustyroad says.

To be fair, I spent 2 nights in Doncaster in 2004 and I'm still not sure I'm completely over it.

Poor bloke asks a question about IT recruitment and the trolls are out. Couldn't you start a separate (yet another) thread to do the bashing?

Account hacked/massive wind-up.

anyone else proud?
Germans probably. They're taking well more than the UK.

Just read two posts about (1) snobbery and (2) dog poo.
In my experience, there is much more of both here than in the UK.
Granted, about 90% of the snobbery I've encountered has come from Poms, not Aussies, and is usually materialistic bragging, like Poms tend to do.
Regards the poo, not sure if the dogs that did them were Poms or Aussies, but there is definitely more knocking about, although I've still not seen any white ones.

If you went to school in Liverpool in the 80s, there were always tons of stories about what this bloke got up to.

Maybe I should explain a bit more, I was flat broke most of the time I was in Perth and I never felt anyone looked down on me - two of my friends were on the WA 'rich list' others were living hand to mouth as we were.
My point is more that your background/profession doesn't matter so much in Australia. To think that there is no divides at all though would be naive - the whole concept of 'bogans' demonstrates that but social mobility is much easier.
What I would say is that no-one will look up to you because you've got a string of degrees and why should they? But in the UK there is a respect for the well educated regardless of whether they have actually translated that into a successful career.
As a well educated professional I found I earned less in Australia in relative terms and I do think people working in trades have more to gain than professionals in moving to Australia.
Just to be absolutely clear I do consider it a positive of Australia and think it is absolutely right that an apprenticeship is valued as highly as a degree and that someone working 12 hour shifts in inhospitable conditions in a mine earns more than I did in an air-conditioned office!
I think young people, boys in particular have much more opportunity in Australia if they aren't the intellectual type.
Agree with most of that. Australia is blue collar working man's paradise. Less so for Management Consultant types on a grand a day in the UK.
Like you say, no bad thing.

The police should be able to charge their parents and recoup the damage bill through civil action. Then maybe they'd take an interest in what their kids were up to instead of sitting at home and getting plastered themselves.

The pace and quality of life is preferable here for us. Also, I reckon the food is much better. We seem to save money here, we didn't in the UK.

Makes absolutely no odds. Still got loads of spare cash in my pocket.
Talk about clutching at straws!

There's no hope for Pot Noodles in Canada.

I've just spent 26 days in the Uk with a thorough 1 hr cycle round Asda, another round primark, and TBh, I think Oz is cheaper, but I ain't getting into that argument...............I know the facts.............others can think what they want according to their agenda or inabilty to apply the exchange rate
I kind of agree with that, we were back in Sept and I don't think there's a great deal in it.
Once you get used to your wage and where to buy stuff, it isn't massively different.
We used to spend about 80 quid a week in Saino's, now we spend about $175 a week in Woollies. Much of a muchness really.

Great reading, well done!

Keep saying it day and night a hundred times and one day your mantra will come true....
6 years and counting in my PIO experience.
Like a broken clock, they will be right at some point, then I'm sure they'll be back in a hurry to tell you how great they are.

I often think that too.. I don't understand why people who don't live in Aus and have no intention of living in Aus and offer absolutely no help to anyone looking to move to Aus scan the internet looking for negative news reports to post then try gloss it over by acting like they care about the outcome of Aus or the people living here when anyone with a brain can see that they would glow should Australia hit some hardship.. Sad B*stards Pablo!! If I had a full time job and a relationship and family and living in a country that I was settled in and apparently happy I would be living my life rather than spending every free minute on here posting the same repetitive drivel which usually entails trying to convince everyone on here that their country/city/town is the dogs b0llocks and Australia is a sh!tty hellhole! I would be interested in the outcome of a psychological assessment on these types of people...
Good post Dave, well said.

Stayed last weekend, $199 offer on again.
Went the French place, Bistro Guillaume, prefer it to Rockpool.
Dessert was chocolate souffle with cherry ice cream. Ridiculous.
