Thoughts of, and Jobs for UK (soon to be ex) Police officer

Hey all

Just mulling things over in my mind here really, and would appreciate everyones thoughts/ advice/ job offers :wink: . We have 7 weeks until we go to Perth and my wife, the chef, has made good progress on potential jobs using seek.com website. Although she hasn't got a job so far (mainly because we live in the UK still as opposed to being actually in Oz) she has been contacted about interviews, but for me things are a little different.

I have looked into transferring into the WA police via a 'lateral entry' and this is possible and I can carry my length of service across with me too (nearly 8 years) which is perfect. The only problem being that the lateral entry conversion courses aren't running until 'early 2013'- which is ok- but obviously I need to work in the meantime. Security would be the obvious choice- and a lot of roles in this area seem to be fairly well paid. So this is a possibility.

Now, owing to the fact I have resigned from the British Police and finish work this week, things seem to be getting more real for us. And this got me to thinking..... Although I have enjoyed being a cop for the most part- this could well be an opportunity for me to branch out and try things new.

What to do? What do I enjoy doing? And what are my interests? Well.....

I have a real interest and enjoyment of going to the gym so have been thinking about re-training and becoming a fitness instructor/ personal trainer - with a view to one day managing or even opening my own gym (maybe).

But I am in a dilemma (mainly in my own mind) as to what to do. I would like a career as opposed to a job - and of course the police provides this, however there were elements of the job I didn't like and the way the 'employees' are treated in the UK plod have caused me to think twice about returning to law enforcement.

The one thing that keeps running over in my mind is the main reasons we are moving to Perth which are;

a) have more family time;

b) be happier in life generally

c) better ourselves

So I ask of you, my good PIO folk.... what would you do???

Ben

Bungeeman we are in a similar position. My husband is in the Army, a good rank and lots of sepcialised skills (bomb disposal, Para, Commando etc). Initially we were going to take the easy option of a lateral transfer but they stopped recruiting his rank. We would have gone down one or two ranks but they were only offering NCO posts so we started thinking actually shall we look at something completely different. So we applied for a 175 visa whilst he continued plodding on (well he is bomb disposal in Afghan at the moment so perhaps plodding is an undertatement!). Anyway fast forward 9 months and we have our case officer and it looks incredibly positive when 'Hello' it's the Australian Army on the other end of an email. They are now recruiting his rank again and would love to have him!! We are still considering what to do but are 90% swayed to seeing Australia as a fresh start. For many of the reasons you stated (family time being the most important) we have decided to use hi sskill set and see what else is out there. have to say he (and I) is incredibly nervous as since University he has only been in the Army. It was easier when we had no option but knowing the transfer is there does make you think... However, you also will have a few months to 'suck and see' whether the grass is greener and if not take the transfer in 2013. Good luck whatever you decide.

Just a quick question...is there an age restriction on the lateral transfer?

Haha! Panel beating hmmmmmm......

I'm just really unsure about what I would like to do, in an ideal world. I do think people who work in a job that is really of interest to them and in a role they really enjoy have the perfect recipe for success. Seeing as here in the UK I spend more time at work than home (taking out the hours I sleep) then I'd want to be doing something that I enjoy too....

It sounds like a no-brainer, i know, I guess it's fear of the unknown!
