Hi good people of the PIO forum

Just wanted to pick your Brains really. Me and my girlfriend want to start the process of getting a visa granted for Aus (perth). We have recently been to see an agent called and are being assessed at this current time for the best way forward. My girlfriend is a pre primary school teacher and I am a lift engineer. The consultant said we will be best to go with her skills on the visa application. Really i just wanna know if we choose not to go the way of an agent where do we start and could you please break it down in lehmans terms for us. As somebody who has been through this whole process your comment are invaluable to people like us.

Regards

Tony and Emma

First of all, check out the points test to see how you go on that. If English is your girlfriend's native language, you can reasonably assume that she can get the 20 points for Superior English.

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/pdf/points-test.pdf Points test

If she scores at least 65 points then...

She does the IELTS test. She will need to score at least 7 in each component for skills assessment (the next step) but perhaps all 8s if more points are needed for the points test.

When she has IELTS results of at least 7 in each component, she obtains skills assessment from AITSL.

After she gets a positive skills assessment from AITSL, she lodges her visa application with you as a secondary applicant if you qualify to be included as her partner. For that, you must either be married OR have lived together in a de facto relationship for at least 12 months.

http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/175/ Skilled – Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175)

If she is 5 points short on the points test, or wants to get the visa faster, she could get state sponsorship and then apply for a subclass 176 visa which has a higher processing priority than a 175, but Western Australia is not sponsoring Pre-primary Teachers at present. If she gets sponsorship from a different state, you will be required to live and work in the sponsoring state for 2 years. It's only a moral obligation at present, but it can only be a matter of time before it actually becomes a visa condition.
