There are plenty of things you can do if you have more than four hours to spare. With a transit visa, you can explore the city of Abu Dhabi and its surrounds.

How do I apply for a transit visa?

Your airline should be able to arrange your transit visa for you prior to your journey. Please check with your airline well ahead of your trip to ensure this is possible. (If not, visit our Immigration & Visas page to find out how you can apply for a visit visa).

We regret that citizens of the following countries are not eligible for a transit visa on arrival: Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Niger and Yemen.

Abu Dhabi (meaning in Arabic “Father of the gazelle”) is the capital city and the largest of the seven Emirates making up the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Abu Dhabi is the seat of the Federal Government and is the country's political and industrial hub as well as being a major historical and cultural centre. It is a city of contrasts. You'll find the domes and minarets of traditional mosques nestled beside ultramodern skyscrapers, chic five-star hotels near vibrant traditional souks (markets) and futuristic tourist attractions neighbouring kilometres of rolling desert dunes.

Economy

Covering around 87 per cent of the UAE's total land area, Abu Dhabi possesses 94 per cent of the country's oil reserves and, as the world's fourth largest oil producer, contributes 10% of the world's oil. An initiative aimed at diversifying its economy has evolved Abu Dhabi into a magnet of foreign investment. It is now a cosmopolitan city boasting one of the highest per capita incomes and one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Population

The UAE's population has grown exponentially to 8.26 million in mid-2010, a growth of 65% in only four years, as strong economic growth has attracted a workforce from all over the world. The population of Emiratis stands at close to one million. The Emirate has the largest population (42 per cent) of UAE nationals.

Religion

Islam is the official religion of the UAE. However, other religions are respected and are diversely represented.

Language

The official language of the UAE is Arabic, but English is widely spoken and understood, with both languages being commonly used in business and commerce.

Heritage and Tradition

The city's progressive vision is tempered by a deep-seated respect for traditions and culture. The artefacts and tools of its early inhabitants, pearl divers, fishermen and dhow builders, are carefully preserved and displayed. Especially honoured is the Bedouin way of life.

Climate

Between November and March a moderate, warm climate prevails during the day at an average temperature of 26°C, with cooler evening temperatures averaging 15°C. Humidity levels rise significantly in the summer months, between June and August.

UAE Currency

The monetary unit is the 'dirham' (AED) which is divided into 100 fils. The Dirham is tied to the US Dollar at a steady exchange rate of $US 1= AED 3.671.

Useful tips

Photography

While it is quite acceptable to take photographs, it is considered offensive to photograph Muslim women. It is also courteous to ask permission before photographing men. Avoid taking photographs of government or military buildings.

Clothing

Abu Dhabi is generally conservative but tolerant when it comes to dress code. The attitude to dress is relaxed, but visitors (both men and women) are advised not to wear excessively revealing clothing in public places, as a sign of respect for local culture and customs.

Things To Do in Abu Dhabi

Down Town Abu Dhabi

Catch a taxi to the busy commercial centre which bustles with traditional and modern activity. On the west side is Al Bateen with a shipyard, where the ancient skill of dhow building is still practiced. The port area of Al Meena is home to several traditional souks (markets).

Desert Safari

Choose between ‘dune-bashing’ (driving up and down sand dunes at high speed in 4X4s - not for the faint-hearted) and the more sedate camel trekking. Most safaris include dinner at a Bedouin campsite, belly dancing, a traditional henna artist and a falconry demonstration. Many operators offer this experience, so be sure to compare prices.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

One of the largest and newest mosques in the world, Sheikh Zayed Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque, is as breathtaking as it is large. Take a tour and be dazzled by the Swarovski crystal chandeliers, 24 carat gold and precious stonework, the endless white marble domes and columns and the largest hand-woven Persian carpet in existence.

The Abu Dhabi Corniche

Enjoy the sea view from the Corniche, a coastal promenade with manicured gardens. There are shady trees, play areas, a swimming beach, refreshment outlets and bicycles for rent.

High tea at the Emirates Palace Hotel

With its 60-metre high dome (and a further 113 domes), the seven-star Emirates Palace Hotel is a magnificent landmark. Take in the opulent surroundings over a decadent high tea.

Falconry

An art developed by the Bedouins for the hunting of small game, falconry is interwoven into the traditions of Abu Dhabi. Experience a falconry display as part of the Falcon World Tour at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital.

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH), is the first public falcon hospital in the United Arab Emirates. Opened on 3rd of October, 1999, as affiliate of the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) , it has become the largest falcon hospital in the UAE with a patient influx of more than 42,000 patients in the first eleven years of existence.

Over the years, the ADFH has established a loyal and a wide patient-base not just in the UAE, but also in countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.

The high standard of professionalism of all ADFH staff and the customer-oriented, extensive experience in diagnosis, treatment and disease prevention are available now for falcons, all kinds of birds including pet birds and poultry farms to let their owners benefit from our extraordinary experience. Moreover, ADFH has highly successfully entered in the field of leisure tourism by continuous and tremendous increases in tourists who have visited and participated in Falcon World Tour year after year. Through its award-winning tourism program, ADFH had proven its importance as one of the major tourist attractions in the Emirate and continuously promoting Abu Dhabi as tourists destination.

Dhow Cruise

Take a trip on an authentic Arabic sailing boat while enjoying views of Abu Dhabi from the water. Several companies offer sunset dhow cruises that include traditional food and drink.

Go for gold

What’s a trip to Abu Dhabi without shopping for some real souvenir items, the kind that could outlast your stock dividends and make you look good at the same time? Go to the Madinat Zayed Gold Souk to bag reasonably priced pieces of jewelries for yourself or your loved ones back home before you head back to the airport. Price haggling, however, is an art you must learn before setting off for this trip. Usually you can bargain for as much as half of the originally quoted price especially if you are purchasing more than one piece of gold jewelry from the same store. Once a price has been verbally agreed on, however, the buyer is expected to make a purchase. The Madinat Zayed Gold Souk is a stone’s throw away from the Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and the Abu Dhabi Central Post Office.

Cheap Eats Out See Abu Dhabi Time Out http://www.timeoutabudhabi.com/

Café Layali Zaman: ‘Baguette’ may be plastered above the door, but Dhabians know it as Café Layali Zaman. Making sure the weather is charitable, pull up a chair outside, though indoors is no second best. Start off with a fresh fruit juice – guava is our particular poison – and let the smell of sweet shisha waft across your nostrils. The usual Lebanese tapas arrives in no time. The stuffed vine leaves are just the right side of bitter, the houmous smooth and tasty and babaganoush worth an award. A shish taouk is just Dhs20 and a range of Arabic teas complete the experience. For atmosphere alone, it’s worth a trip.

AED 20 = approx GBP3.45p

Lebanese Flower: Eye-poppingly tasty and always buzzing, the Khalidiyah branch in particular feels like some rustic kitchen. It’s probably one of the dearer Lebanese outfits, but a shish taouk with houmous, soup and a glass of juice will still only set you back Dhs49. Meanwhile, a cheerful man wanders the restaurant dishing out huge discs of fresh, hot Lebanese bread like some benevolent king. The kebabs are succulent and delicious.

AED 49 = GBP8.19

Istanbouli: The difference between Lebanese and Turkish cuisine is probably about 1,000 calories. Just add cream and yoghurt appears to be the motto. At least that’s the case at Istanbouli, a clean, friendly cafeteria where Turkish gentlemen are usually to be found in hot debate in the corners. The menu reveals a variety of creamy kebabs, starting with the habitual dish of grainy, but delicious soup. The tahini kebab, in particular, is very good, and even if the houmous is a little bland, there is more than enough here to make you want to come back.

Hatam Al Tae: Not the overpriced, mall-friendly Hatem, but rather a cheerful little independent gaff. A sign above the door promises ‘famous Persian food’, and while we’re not sure if this place is world-renowned, it is cosy and looks pretty sharp for a backstreet restaurant. The Iranian fare is also delicious. The menu is laden with kebabs, which arrive juicy and just the right side of charred. Be sure to top the basmati rice off with a pat of butter and inhale the subtle fragrances that make this cuisine so special.

Marroush: Essentially a drive-by takeaway, Marroush has fed the addiction of many a shawarma fanatic in the city. It’s also the Lebanese Flower’s fiercest rival. The decor might err on the side of efficiency, but the food is consistently satisfying. A fanfare of half-a-dozen bowls of olives, houmous, chillis and pickles accompanies even the smallest order. The kebabs are tasty – the lamb khishkash especially is well-spiced, juicy and brilliant. Dinner for two is unlikely to break Dhs70, but unless you speak Arabic you will find yourself pointing at things and mouthing ‘yes’ a lot.

Fun Zone: Lots of loud games and machines including bumper cars, a boxing machine and the popular basketball hoop. Best for tweens, Dhs50 should last them a good half hour.

Al Mariah Mall (02 671 5577). Open daily 10am-3am.

My Playground: A children’s play facility bursting with activities including a bouncy castle, maze, sand pit, library, cinema and soft play area. Kids (aged five and above) can be left unsupervised.

Marks & Spencer, first floor (02 634 0035). Open daily 10.30am-10pm. Entry Dhs35 during the week and Dhs45 on weekends. Dhs15 for kids below one year. Discounts for ADM members.

Sparky’s: There’s a large and well-padded playhouse with ball pools and slides for tots, as well as a small ice rink (kids aged six-12). There’s also loads of games and a bowling alley.

Khalidiya Mall (02 635 4316). Open Sat-Thu 9am-midnight; Fri 1pm-midnight.

Wanasa Land: Boasts a large play area where kids (aged seven and above) can be left unsupervised. Parents need to stay with younger kids. There are computer games, magic shows and a beauty salon where kids can get their faces painted or hair coloured. There’s also a bowling alley and bumper cars.

Shopping in Abu Dhabi

Shopping1.jpg

Shopping is something of a national pastime in Abu Dhabi, perhaps because it’s so diverse – everything from ultra-modern malls with the latest brands, to small, souk-like outlets where you can buy traditional perfumes, handicrafts, spices and carpets. You can spend thousands of dollars on a bejewelled designer watch, or pick up a basic timepiece in a supermarket. You can splash out on an haute-couture designer outfit or buy fabric and have a local tailor make up your very own creation for a bargain price. You can buy a treasured Arabian antique, or a technology-busting super-modern home entertainment system. Prices are often excellent in comparison to those abroad, especially for carpets, textiles and gold. If you are a good bargainer, you can get even better deals. Shops open at around 10am - 10pm or later on weekends. Although most malls work straight through, some independent shops close for an extended lunch break, usually from 1pm - 4pm. Hours usually change during Ramadan and Eid, with many shops closing for the afternoon and reopening from 7pm until midnight or later.

aug08-carpets.jpg

Buying a carpet can be a fascinating experience – most carpets found in Abu Dhabi originate from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, China and Central Asia, and come in an exquisite array of designs and colours. To ensure you are buying the genuine article at a good price, it is advisable to learn a bit about carpets before making your final decision. Visit a number of shops to get a feel for price, quality and traditional designs. As a very rough guide, the higher the number of knots per square inch, the higher the price and the better the quality. Silk is more expensive than wool, and rugs from Iran are generally more valuable than the equivalent from Turkey or Kashmir. Check also whether the carpet was made by machine or hand; hand-made carpets are never quite perfect and the pile is uneven, yet they are more valuable than their machine-made counterparts. Carpet salesmen will happily offer plenty of advice and can usually be trusted; just don’t feel pressured into buying simply because he has unrolled over 30 carpets for you. Most importantly, don’t forget to bargain – it’s all part of the game and is expected. A good starting point is the Carpet Souk at the port end of Mina Road. Mina Souk is similarly well stocked. Most malls also have well-stocked carpet shops.

Gold jewellery is in abundant supply, whatever your taste. Gold is priced according to the international daily gold rate, and is available in 18, 21, 22 or 24 carats. Shopping for gold is a fascinating activity, due to the wide range of styles available, from clean and classic western designs to opulent, ornate Arabian wedding jewellery. You can also buy gold ingots in varying sizes, either for investment or to have moulded into your own design. In addition to the weight price, a small charge is added for craftsmanship, which varies according to the intricacy of design. The Gold Souk on 4th Street in Madinat Zayed has many jewellers, including some of the Gulf’s largest. Apart from the souk, you’ll also find some big-name jewellers in the shopping malls, such as Cartier, Chopard and Tiffany & Co. Regional jewellers to look out for include Damas, Pure Gold and Rivoli.

Souvenirs

Historically, Abu Dhabi’s desert culture resulted in possessions that had to be practical and transportable. Genuine traditional items, such as wooden chests, can be very expensive and increasingly difficult to find, although ‘antique’ copies are widely available. Traditional wooden doors are also popular, and can be hung as works of art or transformed into furniture, usually as tables with glass tops. Many outlets that sell these large items can arrange shipping back to your home country. Other items with a local theme include the Arabian coffee pot and cups (a symbol of local hospitality), prayer beads in a multitude of colours, and woodcarvings in the form of dhows, falconry equipment and canes (traditionally used in Emirati dancing exhibitions). Ancient-looking rifles, muzzle loading guns and the functional yet decorative ‘khanjar’ (a short, curved dagger in an elaborately wrought sheath) are also popular buys. If you intend to purchase these, check first with your airline on procedures for transporting them. Traditional wedding jewellery made of heavy silver or later on gold and crafted into necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings are coveted forms of historic art, and make beautiful displays when mounted into glass box frames. Once valued more highly than gold, the dried resin from the frankincense tree of southern Oman has been traded for centuries, and nowadays is often sold with a small wooden chest and charcoal burner as incense kits. Ghitra headscarves, the distinctive white garment worn traditionally as headdresses by men in the Middle East, have become a popular fashion accessory worldwide. You will find a huge range of ghitra in Abu Dhabi’s souks and malls – aside from the standard white, they come in a multitude of different colours and patterns such as chequered red and white, worn in the cooler months.

Souvenirs You Can Eat

Edible souvenirs include delicious Lebanese sweets (most often made from pastry, honey, ground nuts and dates). Iranian caviar is widely available and good value for money, as it is sold without import duty or any added tax. Chocolate made from camels’ milk is a luxurious treat with a smooth texture and a unique flavour that comes from blending camel milk with vanilla, honey and cocoa beans. It is sold in bars, pralines and as camel-shaped figurines, and is available from many souvenir shops, as well as supermarkets such as Abu Dhabi Co-operative Society, Lulu and Emirates General Market. Perhaps the most classic edible souvenir is dates – this distinctive fruit holds an important place in Arabian heritage as a vital source of nutrition. Today, dates are available in many modern varieties, with each having its own distinct colour and flavour. They are even available dipped in chocolate or stuffed with almonds or candied orange peel. Bateel, the renowned dates delicatessen, has an amazing selection of luxury dates and date produce – sparkling date juice, date jams and preserves and even balsamic vinegar from dates!

Yas Perfumes

Made from the resin of the agarwood tree, oud was historically a valuable commodity and today is still a sought-after luxury item. Various types of oud have different aromas, but all have a strong, deep scent when burned. You can purchase oud as blocks or chips, along with a special burner. Oud oil, however is the result of a complex extraction process, and is popular with Emiratis who use it as a distinctive, long-lasting perfume.

Yas Perfumes, an Emarati company, specialises in oud, oud oils and dukhoons, all of which are traditional regional scents used as perfume and incense, with a selection of French blended perfumes as well. Once you have selected="true"="true"="true"="true"="true" a fragrance, browse through the incredible selection of ornate perfume bottles to store it in. There are numerous branches of Yas Perfumes in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, including Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi Mall, Emirates Palace and another in Al Ain Mall.

Shopping Malls

Spacious, modern and air conditioned, Abu Dhabi’s malls are a welcome escape from the summer heat and a world of choice when it comes to shopping. In Abu Dhabi, malls are a place to catch up with friends or for a family outing – and the fun can go on until late at night. With their imaginative designs and wide range of outlets, shopping malls are perennially popular. The bigger malls buzz with activity as people meet, eat, pose and parade. During festive occasions such as Eid or Ramadan, malls are venues for special events such as dance or cultural [NU3] shows, often featuring international acts. They also hold numerous raffles, often with huge prizes such as luxury cars or cash.

MARKETS/SOUKS

Traditional markets have evolved into bustling tourist attractions selling a fascinating collection of goods. Souk is Arabic for ‘marketplace.’ Historically, dhows from the Far East and India would offload their cargo and the goods would be haggled over in the nearby souks. Over the years the goods on sale have diversified dramatically – today alongside the spices, silks and perfumes you’ll find electronic goods, souvenirs, clothing and household items. Abu Dhabi’s souks are worth a visit for their bustling atmosphere, eclectic variety of goods, and to observe the traditional way of doing business.

Al Mina Fruit & Vegetable Souk

Across the road from the Fish Souk, this fruit and vegetable market is bursting with colour as each seller arranges his produce outside the shops. The choice is amazing, and you can buy by the kilo or the box. Even if you are not buying, this area provides excellent photo opportunities.

Carpet Souk

Yemeni mattresses and machinemade carpets dominate this souk, but bargains can be found if you know what you are looking for. Some of the sellers will make up Arabic majlis-style cushions for a very reasonable price. You’ll find it on Mina Road, near the main port area.

Fish Souk

http://www.visitabudhabi.ae/_data/global/Souk-shopping_02-copy.jpg

Every morning, fishermen load their catch on to the quayside and prepare for a day of haggling – it is a fascinating insight into the way traditional business is done. The fish souk is in Mina Zayed Free Port.

The Souk at Central Market

When fully opened by the end of 2010, The Souk at Central Market will offer more than 250 shops. Opened recently as a soft opening, this traditional Arabian souk will be a 'must visit' destination for residents and tourists with the emphasis on displaying and selling traditional and regional products ranging from jewelry, carpets, antiques to traditional tailoring, fashion and diverse restaurants.

The Souk at Qaryat Al Beri

This contemporary adaptation of a typical Arabian souk is home to local and international retail brands, coffee shops and a diverse range of restaurants. Abras (water taxis) take you around the souk via meandering manmade canals, and the stunning waterside complex offers alfresco dining in beautiful architectural surroundings.

Other smaller shops include computer suppliers and ladies’ fashion outlets.

Hamdan Centre

Something of an institution on Abu Dhabi’s shopping scene, this vibrant centre in the heart of the city is a good place to buy, leather goods, shoes, sports equipment and touristy knick-knacks, all at bargaining prices. It also has a pharmacy.

Khalifa Centre

This ethnic mall is teeming with craft and souvenir shops, as well as shops selling Iranian carpets – a great place for souvenirs.

Marvels of engineering Susie, it's a shame but at the moment Silverstone and Brands Hatch just cannot compete. Though I love both of the tracks and have seen many Grand Prix's there, they are badly catered for in terms of parking and facilities.

  • 2 months later...

I flew from Dublin to Melbourne (via Abu Dhabi) last month. Wow, what great service. I would advise anyone who wants a stress free trip to fly with them.

I usually fly with Air France (company booking) and the difference is like night and day. With Air France, they get you fed and you don't see them until the breakfast before landing. They make sure that you understand that they are there for your safety and not your comfort. When it came to Etihad, those poor girls were running up and down the aisles with water constantly during the flight and nobody had to ask for anything.

The inflight entertainment is excellent which helps pass the time when you can't sleep. My wife is dreading the flight to Australia, so I have convinced her that this is the only way to go. It also means that you have one less flight when travelling from Dublin with a stopover.

The Etihad Guest frequent flyer programme is excellent, so don't forget to join. You can get a free tablet PC for two return flights to Melbourne, delivered to your door. For a family flying down to Oz, it's a nice little bonus.
