jsc77
Hi, Can anyone advise how healthcare works between arrival and registering for Medicare? ie if one of the kids gets ill and needs to see a dr, what do we do? Also, according to the Medicare website, we should wait 7-10 days before registering. Have others done this, or is it possible to register immediately? Thanks, John
Guest shooterguy
we registered 3 days after arriving, (same fears as you) you get a ticket with your registration number as soon as you register, (cards come in about a week,) you can use the number straight away. Ozmaniac
You don't need to register with a practice here so you can go to any doctor and you don't need a Medicare number to do so. If you need to visit a doctor before you have registered for Medicare or received a Medicare number, you will have to pay the fee out of pocket, but after you have registered, when you present the receipt, you will receive the Medicare rebate. calNgary
Medicare quote 7 - 10 days in Oz before applying to ensure you are on the system when you apply, if your not you may have to go away for a day or two and go back again. I have found leaving it 5 days is normally adequate though. Some Medicare offices have stopped issuing the temporary card so you basically go in with your passports ,fill the form in and then wait for your cards to arrive in the post. If you need a Dr before your cards arrive, first ring Medicare,, if your card has been processed they will give you the number over the phone, if not explain to the Dr's receptionist you are waiting for cards. You will then more than likely have to pay for your appointment but as soon as your registered with Medicare and have the cards you can claim the fee back . If the Dr you saw Bulk Billed you should get the enitre costs back if not you get a % of the cost back. Hope this helps Cal x
