Shipping car to UK ?

Now excuse my ignorance but being a female and a non driver, I am not in the least bit interested in cars..................

On the other hand, my OH has this 'passion' about cars which after all these years I still fail to understand.

He currently drives a Ford Falcon XR6 BF MK11 - his words, not mine..........

and he wants to take it back to the UK.........................

I know I made the point about being ignorant about cars but I do know one thing about this car........................the cost of fuel.................

I personally think that he should just sell the thing here (it would save me a lot of time and effort trawling web sites such as DVLA + Customs and PIO).

Would this car be 'acceptable' ie meet customs regulations !!! Do not have a clue what I am going on about but hopefully there is some nice person on this site who can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Gill

it will certainly turn a few heads in the UK. check out the spares situation, put new tyres , brakes on here, it will be a lot cheaper.

You *should* be able to, as a personal import. It'll need a rear fog light, a MPH speedo (or a convertor - about £20 and a bit of black tape - for the 'K' in 'KMPH' on the dash) and then to pass an ESVA (details on the internet).

But he should know tha the XR6 and XR8 are Australian made cars only sold on Oz, so you can only get parts in Oz.

Combined with the exchange rate, it'll be expensive to repair (and Ford UK will not want to assist).

But it's an awesome motor, and would be rare in the UK.

EDIT - to add.

To ESVA a car, you'll need something called a "model report". This is a report that lists everything about the car (from size, to the engine and the crash testing). Your car will then need to match this report (so no aftermarket exhausts or wheels).

The model report can be used from another car (XR6), so you'll need to find someone who's imported one previously and see if you can borrow theirs.

Some companies specialise in this. But usually it's more Japanese stuff.

I'd suggest signing up to PistonHeads.com and asking there. It's a massive UK car forum, and something like an XR6 would tickle their fancy. Apparently it's easier to import a Ute too (diff regs for a *work* motor).

If fuel is a concern be aware that currently we are paying an average of £1.28-1.30 per litre for unleaded. And no sign its going to go back down, only up

I can remember not too many years ago filling up the tank cost around £35-40 (and we thought that was a lot  ) Today that same tank is around £65-£70 if its really empty

See if you can get some insurance quotes before you do it, could turn out to be expensive for such a car

Hi there, I would sell it there to be honest. We shipped ours over to the UK but we had shipped them over in the first place so it was very easy to ship them back. If your car is not a recognised model over here you may find it difficult to sell on (as we found when trying to sell our ford galaxy in Oz).

Second hand cars are much more expensive in OZ and what you would get for it will probably buy you a newer one here and you wont have to wait for it to arrive and fork out hire car costs in the interim. Just my opnion hope you can decide x

Thanks everyone for your replies which I have just shown OH..................I think it would be better to sell the car before we leave......as much as he LOVES his car, I think he is in agreement.

He is now muttering the dreaded words 'BMW' as he walks away............ah, men and cars.

I certainly wouldn't bother. There are a couple of Falcons that has been on Ebay UK for ages and just keeps getting cheaper and cheaper. One says parts no problem, the engine would be OK as they are an engine used all over but most other bits would be a nightmare. Sell it and buy from the huge range of cars available there.

Tell him not to bother with a BMW. The only ones that will have to poke of the Ford will be huge in price and depreciate heavily.
