Hi im new to this we are due to emigrate to darwin in 3 moinths i have a job at the royal darwin i have a 13 yr old boy and 3 yr old girl and husband, i have done a lot research throughout the year into darwin, but nothing like hearing it from the horses mouth so to speak, just wondering where do all the poms live in darwin? Which are the less desirable suburbs to live in and which are the better? I wont have transport and really thought about walking to work, i am aware that renting is very expensive, ive been looking at suburbs of tiwi, wanguri, nightcliffe, brinkin, malak, nakara, but really dont know what these areas are like to live in?? If i have to travel to work to get a better suburb to live in then so be it, if possible could someone give me some idea on how far away on foot and by transport are the best suburbs to live in to the royal darwin hospital, i have looked into dripstone school for my son but again really dont have a clue can anyone advise !!!!! We are going on a 457 sponsorship

Hi Julie, I work at the Royal Darwin. Tiwi is a really nice suburb and you could possibly rent a house close enough to walk. The other suburbs you mentioned are very nice except perhaps Malak, no offence to anyone. I understand that its better to be here and get to know that suburb first to work out the parts that are good. Best to get a short term holiday accomm first until you check out the longer term rental scene and areas that you like etc. Any questions just ask. Darwin is lovely, you'll be fine. Always lots of new people coming in so it's easy to make friends.

HI, many thanks for the reply to info on best suburbs, how long have you worked at the royal for?? have you a family? and if so do you know the better schools for a 13yr old boy and a 3 year old girl (although i dont think they are schooled in Oz at that age are they??) i would appreciate any info that you could possibly tell me regarding rentals etc, food price transport i find it all well and good looking on the maps and researching it but nothing like coming straight from the horses mouth. would you possible suggest getting transport then or taking the bus?? do you live in tiwi? my agent has said that palmerston is a lot cheaper to rent but i have not researched the areas in and around there plus i definately would have to commute, my husband doesnt drive adn he will be at home wil the younger child. what job opporunities are there for employment for him in and around the area he has no trade as such?? we are all looking forward to coming out but just waiting for a house sale!!! are there many properties that are furnished as we have decided NOT to ship any furniture etc. regards julie

Hi Julie, sorry we haven't got kids but I'll ask at work re schools and let you know. I've been at the hospital around a month so also a newbie, but as I said, there are always loads of new comers who are interested in hearing about you, and lots of ways to make friends. As your agent suggested you get a bit more in terms of housing for your money in Palmerston, not lower prices but maybe more space for your money... but you should come and look at it first. Personally I couldn't be bothered with the drive and I think Darwin itself is much nicer...but that's my personal opinion and I know loads of people love living there. Also, you need to be cautious as, like Darwin, there will be suburbs where you wouldn't want to live. If hubby's at home all day he may also feel isolated in Palmerston until he makes friends as it will be harder to get into Darwin where there is more to do.

In terms of work for hubby, the great thing is that Darwin is booming and there seem to be all sorts of jobs. Try a general search on www.seek.com.au for jobs in Darwin. I think it's pretty easy to find well paid work.

Finally re furniture..we heard many stories of high costs here and shipped all our furniture. In truth, if you hunt around prices don't seem too bad but then it would probably cost a fortune to replace all the bits that you've accumulated as some random things are very expensive for unknown reasons! However, it does cost more to ship to Darwin as containers usually go via Melbourne or some other city and then road train. We have left all our stuff in Melbourne for now until we are settled. It's easy to find furnished accomm. but probably easier in the wet season. I hear getting accomm. in the dry can be difficult as too many people looking to stay for the sun! Just google property for rent Darwin to get ideas. Rent is expensive and you should expect to spend around $450 per week.

Hope that gives you some ideas. Feel free to keep in touch and good luck with the house sale. We sold our house in Scotland and that seemed like a minor miracle, so there is hope! Re food prices, you really need to stock up the freezer when things are on special. I think we are currently spending around $150 pw for food for 2 adults...but most of that is probably wine!!

HI There, i really appreciate all the information that you have provided, thanks a lot!!! is there anything that you WOULD suggest to ship or post ? and how long did it ake your belongings to arrive in melbourne? i haev been quoted approx 12 weeks to darwin with a couple of shipping companies but this is if i were to ship the whole house contents as i would have a container to myself, at a cost of approx £8000 with taxes !! if not they said i would have to wait a while for a container to be filled with other folks belongings and they said that can take forever as NO ONE moves to Darwin HA HA HA ...... that didnt phase me . LOL. what info do you need to be able to rent a property in darwin ... refs etc?? we did think about trying to send bits through the post of which our family would do when we were settled as this would only take a week or so but i know that weight is a limiting factor. could i just be nosey and ask are you in medicine and if so which specialist area ?? i am a renal nurse and been qualified for 3 years now and really just cant wait to be out there enjoying the life !!! once again i really do appreciate all the info you have provided so far. regards julie

There are plenty of UK people around Darwin so you won't have to wait too long to share a container, although obviously longer than if you were going to Melbourne etc! I think it took about 10 weeks for our container to arrive in Melbourne as there were delays with the ship. I don't have any specific recommendations about things to bring. I found a lot of household things to be a bit cheaper than I was expecting, but probably still a bit more expensive than UK, depending on where you like to shop. Have a look on www.BigW.com.au and www.Kmart.com.au as those shops sell lots of general household stuff and will give you an idea of prices. You could probably get catalogues specific to the Darwin branches. Also look at coles online for food prices, food prices are a bit of a shocker and set to get much worse due to the terrible floods. You could always leave your stuff where it is and get someone to ship it for you later when you know what you need and can't easily replace. Whatever you do it ends up costing a fortune!!

I work in social work so can't give you much info about the medical side of things but the hospital is in a really nice environment with Casuarina shopping precinct nearby-tempting at lunchtime. If you live in the northern suburbs you'll be close to Casuarina which has the big supermarkets and a cinema. It's also really close to the beach. There is a bus service to the hospital if you don't want to drive.

We have only been here for the build up/wet when renting is a bit easier but we had to provide contact details for current and previous employers and one personal reference. They contacted current employers to check us out but not sure about the others. We had drivers license/photo ID proof of address and copies of bank statements/salary.

I'm off to bed now, have just had two full nights of no sleep due to the incredible thunder and lightening storms that apparently could carry on for the whole of the wet. The lightening lights up the entire house and the thunder is terrifying at times and really loud although at one point the frogs were so loud they drowned out the sound of the thunder. Bring earplugs!! Seriously though it is really nice here in an exotic way, although it does have its challenges. At least with your quals you can easily move around if you decide you want to try somewhere else.

Hi Julie,

I will be moving to Tiwi later this year along with my husband and son who will 3. I have found a really helpful website regarding daycare and arranged a few appointments to visit them when we go over in June for a holiday. its careforekids.co.au and gives testimonials and waiting times. Also, my mother in law lives in Tiwi and works at the hospital and she walks to work everyday.
