  1. Glad to hear you like it so far, we have just bought a house in Wulagi and cant believe its been nearly a year since we got here! Our son loves it too and has the accent now, so far Darwin has been the best place for us!
  2. We had a snake outside our front door and had to remove it so that we could come and go. I was just about ready to pack up and go back to England!! When I told people here they just laughed and shrugged it off. I think if you go looking for creepy crawlies then you will find them, if you just get on with your day and dont focus too much on the 'nasties' then you will just enjoy being here as you should. And there are plenty of people here that will help you out with advice if you ask, I know I have sqeezed people for info on the local wildlife (mainly because I have a curious toddler) and they have been only too happy to advise.
  3. Hi The buckells ! Me and my family are in Darwin and have seen the amount of jobs advertised in the NT news each week so Im sure you wont have any problems. look on careerone.com.au and see if you can find anything related to your work as this seems to be the main source of adverts here, although there are others. You will need to do a bit of networking when you get here as its all about who you know, not what you know (as we have found out) and just taking each opportunity give to you.
  4. Hiya, We live up in the northern suburbs, Tiwi, which is just round the corner from Leanyer and just like Palmerston there is loads to do with kids up here. Both cities tend to mimic each other with activities and groups so it doesnt matter where you live. Our son is nearly 3 and absolutely loves it here so Im sure yours will too. Let us know when your settled and we can meet up. There are other mums on here too that Im sure will be more than happy to meet up too! Darwin city council website can be useful for finding out about things going on.
  5. We used Go Matilda nad they were brilliant. Very thorough, efficient and helpful....I knew who my contact was at all times and they always replied promptly. I went with them based on other recommendations on here.
  6. We used an agent as I didnt want to get anything wrong! Me and my husband are both self employed too which made it a bit trickier to prove things - and it was just peace of mind to be honest. If you do choose to use an agent, I can recommend Go Matilda, very efficient and helpful.
  7. Pickfords came and took my stuff yesterday too. They literally to EVERYTHING and even packed my Jeans which I needed today!!! Anyway, very efficient, lovely boys and were great with the dog.
  8. Its true that you dont HAVE to have the sticker in your passport but its alot easier to get on with life if you do. I found this out when going to get medicare stuff sorted and other bits and bobs. I ended up getting it in there. Its also nice to have a look at it in your passport and remind yourself you have it!!
  9. I am going over next week and my husband will follow at Christmas. We will be paying the mortgage from Oz, just transferring it into our british account each month, until we sell it. I dont see that there will be any problems with that - as long as they get there money Im sure they wont be bothered where it comes from!
  10. Im suprised you went for State Sponsorship for an area you didnt intend on living in. I would be gutted if I had tried to get into Adelaide and couldnt but then read this and saw that you had got in there but didnt really want it.
  11. Im due to fly out with with my 2.5 yr old son in 9 days with my husband following at Christmas. I have been up and down like a yoyo, excited in the day and nervous at night. I will be living with the inlaws so wont be on my own and start a job the following week so will meet people, but Im still nervous! When I lay awake in bed at night and question myself if Im doing the right thing I remind myself of the reasons we are doing this and it usually helps. Im sure these are normal feelings, it a massive life changing experience and we would be a bit wierd if we didnt have these feellings.
  12. Thanks littem, good to hear as we have Pickfords coming on Monday and Im stressed out as cant think how to organise everything!
  13. thanks guys. We have gone down the family and friends route but its not possible. We cant bring her over later as cant see that we will ever be able to save that amount of money as well as pay for rent, kindy and general living! The cost is everything added together, fights to sydney, quarantine, dog walker, flight to Darwin and the vets fees for bloods etc. I keep hoping the money will magic up from somewhere but the reality is it wont. Fingers crossed me and my son will be too busy to miss her too much.
  14. Just a quick one to get it of my chest. After doing our sums and having to reduce the price of our house we can no longer take our beloved family pet, Jaye. There have been lots of tears and trying to find ways of finding the £4k it costs to get her to Darwin but we cannot do it. The blue cross came round this week and registered her etc and we get to keep her here untill they rehome her which is great, but I really dont want to do it. She is such a part of the family, plays doctors with my son, sleeps on his bed with him and was my baby before he came along. The Blue cross said it may take longer to rehome her as she is 9 and people want younger dogs, I just hope and pray she gets a loving family where the kids will love and play with her and treat her as we have.
  15. Im not sure if this should be under 'Dilemas' but hey ho I just need to vent. Im 3 weeks away from the biggest move of my life and I feel like I have been on the big dipper roalercoaster for the past year. I thought that the hardest thing for my family would be getting the visa, but it has turned out to be everything afterwards is proving to be the hardest. 2 sales have fallen through on our house and I have had to admit defeat and give up my dog of 9.5 years as its just too much to take her. I accepted a job to start on 20th Oct and I accepted it as the house was going through the first sale process. Because of this I stopped taking on new clients (im a hairdresser) and stopped booking in my regulars. Then I cancelled my sons pre-school (which took a year on a waiting list to get into) and Pickfords are coming to take all our things next week. To make my emotional rollercoaster even harder my mum had become quite sour about the whole thing as she feels like my mother in law is gaining everything from the move and she is jelous. Now me and my husband have agreed that I will go over with my son and live with his family until the house sells here and he can join us. Im not sure how I feel about being away from him for a few months as we have never been apart like that and Im worried my son will be upset. Now I have written it all down it doesnt seem quite as bad, however Im still struggling to sleep at night, and I find that Im really excited in the day but start having doubts in the late hours of the night - is this normal?
  16. Hi Moda82, You can find out rental costs on the website ericfish suggested, thats where I got mine from. I would suggest calculating food costs to be what you pay now then convert into dollars on the current rate. Your statement of commitment needs to show that you have thought about the move to Darwin, what you have researched, why you want to live there in particular, how your going to support yourself when you get there, show costs of setting up home - ie, buying a car, rental bond, white goods, shipping, just show you have really thought about it. Add any people you have made contact with over there and your relationship with them. I hope this helps.

    Perth or Darwin?

Hiya, We are moving to Darwin in 3 weeks and have been to both Perth and Darwin and loved both places. Darwin is probably a bit more laid back than Perth and of course the weather is different, but one isnt better than the other, just different. You shouldnt worry about education either - both have turned out doctors and teachers etc. The info on the internet doesnt really do Darwin justice, Personally I would say try Darwin - but then Im biased!
  18. I had a really horrible nightmare that my dog, Jaye, was on her stopover in Singapore and managed to get out of her crate and plane and was left to fend for herself on the streets of Singapore
  19. Im not packed yet! the shippers come on 3rd oct so should really pull my finger out! We are going to be living in Tiwi with the inlaws to begin with and I have got my son into Jingli Kindy on Mondays and Fridays. Not sure where we will live in the end so Im going to use my time until my husband joins us to do some investigating! Confirmed my job start date this week as 20th Oct at a salon in winnellie, whivh will be part time but Im so nervous as have been my own boss for 3 years. where do you live? Have you found any good toddler groups?
  20. count me in junellew, only 3 weeks and 6 days until we get there! not that Im excited!!!
  21. Hi Shell, me and my son are due to land over there in 4 weeks (husband to follow after sale of house) and I am really looking forward to it. My boy will be 3 in Jan and Im not sure which pre school to send him too whilst I work part time. I would love to get together when we get there and make some much needed friends!!
  22. yumimumi - thanks for yours - I had forgotten to cancel the child benefit!! Norfolk Girl - LOL, I think we would be even more stressed if it was left them!
  23. I have 5 weeks to go until me and my son go to Darwin. We have had 2 sales fall through on the house and I am going nuts! SO we have deicided that I will go first with my son and stay with family until it sells and then my husband can join us (I have a job to go to). The shippers come on Oct 3rd and I feel like Im chaising my tail trying to sort things out! I have also been lying in bed at night staring at the ceiling thinking 'oh my god this is it'!!! Cant wait to get going just wish my husband was coming at the same time.
  24. In 5 years I hope that my family will still be living in Darwin and enjoying it. I hope that my son will be doing well in school, have lots of friends and that he will be a happy boy. I also hope that we will have another child and that I will be running my own business over there as I do here. Most of all, I hope that we are all still a happy family, settled and looking forward to the next 5 years.
  25. We are taking our qecher tent and a little one for my son, as yes they do camp over there and even if we dont use it for camping my son will use it to play in the garden. As fr cleaning, I have been told to clean everything outside in Jays fluid, and it will only be the pegs that need cleaning or anything else thats been in the ground.
