Hi

I am new to Poms in Oz.

We are hoping to move to Adelaide in December. Anyone got any views or advice?

Would appreciate it.

Especially, can we take our electrical goods with us - will they still work in Adelaide?

OMG so many now know about SA may have to rethink an go to Tassie!!!!!

But hey Boroboy welcome to the mad addictive world of PIO.

Electrical goods will work but you have to make sure tv's are pal summink or other, fridges must be up to date same as freezers,

it's to do with the cfc's i think.

Hi and welcome to PIO.

We love Adelaide and have lived here over 7 years now.

It's a tough move - so keep hold of that sense of humour, make sure that the family bond is strong as it will be tested.

All electrical goods works here,as KP Nuts said make sure your fridge is newish and then there is no prob with older CFC's.

Most UK TV's will not have sound here for some reason and will only play through an Australian video.Prices for TV's are not too bad here though.

bring lots of multi sockets - then you have a lot less plugs to change!!

HI

Thanks everyone for the replies. Good to know we are not on our own.

Cant wait to go to Adelaide. Dont know where we will be living but will sort that out when we arrive. Hoping to rent for a while until we get to know the lie of the land and then buy.

I am a fitter and turner and have not got a job to go to but am told my trade is on skills shortage list so keeping fingers crossed.

What are spiders and creepy crawlies like - this is the one thing I have been wary of. Family call me the hesitant man because of this. Are there any dangerous \ poisonous ones to look out for I mean stay away from.

Hiya

Welcome to PIO!!

Don't worry to much about the snakes and spiders. Snakes won't come near a house as there is too much vibration, so you have to be very unlucky to have one cuddling up to you in bed! They are of course found in the reserves around here but you just have to be careful and look where you are walking. Most woudn't come out in the mid day sun anyway.

As for spiders. Well I have a fear of them yet I have a window spider about as big as a walnut and I've named him Blackie!

Huntsmen spiders are the biggest and most frightening but they are harmless. It just takes some getting use to seeing them in your garage.

However, the white tips scare the eebegebies out of me. We've had 4 in our house since my arrival at Easter. They can give a nasty bite and even though you can get a vaccine at the hospital for the bite. The bite will reoccur every year.

So make sure everyone wheres their slippers in the house and I recommend to "bomb" (chemical spray) your house every 6 months to keep all things creepy at bay!!:spinny:

Thanks for the info and advice Roo.

I dont know how I am going to cope with the spiders. Have you ever heard a man scream, all of South Australia will hear me.

Heard the Huntsman can hide in your visor in the car - will cause an accident if one in mine when I am driving.

:arghh:

Hmmm - the snakes and bitey beasties question............

It is honestly not as bad as you think here but a little common sense and caution go a long way.

We have some acreage on the edge of Onkaparinga Hills, sort of semi rural.

We did know what we were getting into as we had done a lot of homework.I'm also Senior First Aid trained with a little specialist training in bites and stings.

Remember that living more rural we see more wildlife, more suburban and built up areas see a lot less.Although there is always the chance of something coming to visit - a friend of ours at Hallett Cove had a snake sunbathing on her doormat!!

Here's my experience after seven years................

You DO get snakes coming into houses in the hot weather they seek shade and your nice air conditioning. We have seen several on our land and HAD ONE IN THE HOUSE:shocked:

It was Valentine's Day and over 40c outside.Mrs Tyke was walking into another room and nearly walked on it - it did rise up to strike her but (brave girl) remembered to stand still,be quiet and back off slowly. She then shut the door and dropped some blankets at the bottom of the door.I was going into town when Mrs Tyke rang me - you can still see the marks where I did a U - turn on the central reservation on Goodwood Road!!

I told her to grab the dog and go over to our neighbors - leaving all the doors open.

When I returned our neighbor and I did a thorough search but our little visitor had left.

2 snakes have visited our pool, both dispatched with a handy shovel ( although I don't advocate this unless you are experienced and have on tough jeans and boots).I've even walked on one in a pile of leaves, snakes are a bit thick and think that if their head is covered no one can see them:err:

Personally I'm not too bad with snakes,I worry about our dogs attacking them and being bitten. The local vet has a good supply of antivenin.

Spiders can be fun,as said Huntsman don't bite but they do make you jump. Our vac gets some exercise in that dept - great for spider removal.

White Tips are more common in winter, their bites can give a condition called "necrotising arachnidism." which is basically a flesh eating disease - have a look at this link for further info............White-tailed Spiders

One of the scariest looking things are the Centipedes here - up to 5 inches long!!They have a sting similar to bee stings in pain terms.

Scorpions??? - yep there are small scorpions in rural areas most people never see them - they are only up to an inch long and bee sting pain again ( had one in the house 2 days ago - now swimming in the sewage farm).

RedBack Spiders... Shy little things that make messy and very strong webs on the edges of plant pots, damp corners and so on.You soon know where to look for them.

If you don't like using chemicals - use hair spray on them - they ain't going anywhere then.I have to do this on the rocks that are on one side of our pool.

The one insect/bitey thing that does bother me are ants.........:arghh:.The Bl***y things can be a right old nuisance at times. You have to keep anything sweet covered .

Scared you enough???????????????/

Seriously you will probably never encounter a 10th of what we do,I have a fascination for Australian wild life in all of it's rich mixture.

We see a lot of lizards too, great for pest control as they eat lots of bugs and snails. We have a pair of Blue Tongues we can feed by hand.

The bird life is stunning,we have quite a flock of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos roost in the trees to the back of us .Now and again we have visits by the Black Cockatoos (B52's),they are huge - and noisy.

To the rear of the property on the ridge roads we see loads of Roo's grazing at dusk - 40 - 50 time.

When here call into the Natural History department in the Museum in the city. They are really helpful and will spend a while answering your questions.

None of this is posted to put you off ,I have just done my homework :)

Tyke my good man you forgot the Blue Ringed Octopus and the sharks! Oh and the bloody ants now they really are a pain in the behind.

Adelaide is a lovely place I am sure if you settle here and find a good job you'll enjoy life here. It all depends on the job situation.

The Jaws theme runs through my mind when I'm paddling!!!:biglaugh:

Not that many reported incidents in the wet bit of Adelaide though:wacko:

We're having a great time here!

We don't get many spiders etc...Oh was bitten by one, but he survived (although we all know the spider died with a nasty taste in her mouth:yes:). Once a year we get those annoying flying-anty-things (can't remember their name..not that I've been properly introduced), then there's the Christmas beetles, the bl**dy flies etc, but no biggie. I sprayed everywhere when we moved in, but haven't bothered since. I walk round barefoot, let the kids swim in the Murray/sea/whatever and generally don't worry!

I know all the things Tyke* and Mrs T. say are true, but it's fine. I wouldn't let it worry you...I prefer to worry about the outrageous price of fruit and veggies! $9 a kilo of broccoli!!!!:swoon:

*Infact, probably best to just trust Tyke...:cute:

Hi

Thanks for all your replies.

You have scared me but will try and remain calm and just deal with what I have to deal with at the time.

You should see me when there is a moth in the kitchen so what I am going to be like in Adelaide I dont know.

Dont get me wrong I am big strapping bloke, a mans man and all that but creepy crawlies and spiders and things that have wings (not birds) just give me the eeebeejeebees.

So is life in general good in Adelaide?

What does everyone do in their leisure time - is there a lot to do or is that why people have bbqs.

Also is the price of good expensive as mentioned about fruit and veg?

Life is not too bad here at all - it's what you make it.

For leisure..............alcohol plays a fair part.

In summer we do have a lot of BBQ's and picnics out including meets at the beach.

In winter it's more smaller gatherings inside and the pub :-)

It is becoming more expensive in general here but I think that SA is still cheaper than most states for cost of living and housing.

Hi Guys

really good post!! Tyke you have given me nightmares over what happened to Mrs Tyke I not sure I could remain so calm. I suppose its all what you get used to and Blighty we don't have as many (different biting insects) It will definetely be an adventure.

Boro boy my hubby is the same as you 6ft 2 mans man but perified of flying insects, spiders he is okay but if they fly its quite amusing to watch. Will have to get together when we all get there and you 2 can be the entertainment. Ha ha.

I can definitely handle snakes, and I think I can get used to the spiders (ahem!), but one thing I really really hate are persistent flies that keep buzzing around your head and try to get into your eyes and mouth. We cycled through the outback (Darwin to Adelaide) a few years back and absolutely got plagued by the bloody things in some stretches. Is Adelaide very infested with flies??? I hope not as otherwise my dreams of lounging on the patio by the pool with a cold drink may be well and truly over!!! :biglaugh:

Don't worry about the frogs - the spiders have eaten them all:arghh:

Only kidding.

Now and again a frog will invade our pool or ornamental pond - I've found they don't hang around long as they dislike Chlorine.

Other bugs and beasties are not too bad ,especially if you live more suburban.

I've been attacked by just about everything here here now - even some cute ad cuddly stuff so I should know:err:

Good luck in your choice and move here June!

Hi mate

Don't worry about spiders and stuff, I've just spent 6 weeks out there and had a job finding them. I like spiders etc and even at night with a head torch they are hard to find. The quality of life and the sunshine far out weighs the odd spider. Really it isn't a problem, even if you do see one you just walk past it on your way to the beach and soon forget about it. And remember they are alot more scared of us than we are of them...

The centre of Adelaide is very Metropolitan/Suburban.

It's very leafy as you look down on it from the hills, quite surprising actually.

There are so many different areas from beachfront to semi rural before you get out of what is classed as metropolitan in Adelaide.

I've not visited Perth so can't comment on it.
