claireg
Hi Claire. Im also a Clare wiht a Freelander and wish to bring mine over . Can i ask you are you able to get a ro ro service in ireland or are you doing a container.?? Cant bear the tought of seing mine! By the way im in Ireland too Hi Clare. We are on the Isle of Man so our stuff would get shipped to Liverpool and then put in a container, all co-ordinated by the removal co. Apparently it would cost about £2k to bring a container over to the Island on the ferry just to fill up and send back so they load up in Liverpool. Have you contacted any shippers yet, they may do the same from Ireland. Really like our freelander but it has to be financially worth the hassle. Iron Chef
Hi Kristian Can you adivise if it is worth bringing over a 2007 Freelander 2 GS, approx 20k miles. Thanks Claire Normally I wouldn't advise bringing a Freelander over, but being relatively young and low mileage, it's probably still worth doing. They're not overly popular in Australia, so it won't make you any money when you sell it. Hi Kristian I was just wondering how strict the 12 month ownership is? We have to enter Oz by 1st march and I acqured the car on the 5th March, so I will be about a week out - will this (in your experience) be ok? Cheers, China Hi China, Very! They normally they'll give you about 2 weeks' grace on the 12 month rule - it depends very much on whether you've been out of the country on holiday or whatever during that 12 -month period. If you spent 2 weeks in Ibiza partying last year, you may be in trouble... Best to check with DIT on that to confirm your individual circumstances though. Hi Clare. Get in touch with me guys and I can forward you on to the shipping company I use ex-UK. What you'll find is most stuff leaves for Australia ex-Southampton, and is trans-shipped from other ports in the UK to there.
Guest Prawny4
Hi, We have enquired about shipping new car over. We are also on 457 four year temp. visa. The answer given by the experts/authorities was that we must own the car for minimum 12 months and prove that we have lived in the UK that entire time whilst in possession. We was going to leave ours with a relative then ship over on its own later ( purely because cost of car here was 2/3 of cost to buy in Oz ). Hope this helps. Guest Prawny4
Hi, great help thanks. Before the chosen shipping company load the car into the container do we have to get it cleaned to any specific standard? STrange but maybe simple question for you to answer and help us out. Many thanks!
Iron Chef
Hi Prawny4 yes that's correct, you must have owned AND used it for a 12 month period. Just on that, the new regs state that if you meet the criteria and come to Australia without the car, you MUST apply for the import approval within six months of arriving here. Once you have the import approval, there's not time restriction on bringing it over, but you can't just apply for the import approval whenever you like after you're here. Guest mikewheble
Hi Iron Chef On your web site under the section 'Compliance' why does the car have to have replacement tyres? My Mitsubushi Raging Bull has 22" General Grabber tyres which are all road legal. Thanks in advance
Iron Chef
Hi Mike, For anyone reading my website, my core business is bringing cars in from Japan via the Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme (SEVS) - what's written there doesn't apply to personally imported vehicles. To answer your question about tyres, no they don't need to be changed as long as they are still road legal in terms of tread depth.

To answer your question about tyres, no they don't need to be changed as long as they are still road legal in terms of tread depth. Hi IC That's a relief as my tyres are over £250 each and probably more in Oz. I have decided to take my vehicle as it's only 18 months old (for which I have owned it) and looking at equivalent vehicles in Oz, they would be circa $40,000. The other thing is my vehicle isn’t standard and has been raised etc. Many people have said that I should put it into shows however; it's a working vehicle for me. Thanks again and I'll give you a shout closer to the time so you can quote. Regards Mike
Iron Chef
No probs - one handy hint though, if you're planning to send it on RO-RO, cost is calculated on volume of the vehicle, so drop the standard suspension back in, it might save you about $250US
Cassie2
Iron Chef I am a newbie and have been reading through your fantastic posts. Sorry, my post is a little lengthy. My family and myself are currently in Bali having driven from the UK as part of a RTW adventure using a Land Rover Defender 110 CSW (2.5TDi, year of manufacture 1998). We have a special passport (carnet) for the vehicle which allows us to temporarily import for a set period of time to Oz before having to get it out again (this would mean shipping vehicle back to UK and then selling it on. However, we believe we are just about to be granted Subclass 176 Sponsored Skilled Visa for WA. In preparation, we are trying to ready ourselves and decide whether to A) Ship vehicle back to UK and sell B) Permanently Import to OZ and then eventually sell C) Temporarily import vehicle to OZ using carnet and then apply for permanent import within 6 months (but we assume there would be no cost difference, just time gained to get ourselves settled) For insurance purposes, the value of the vehicle under the carnet is approx 5,000 GBP. The reality of the value is somewhat more (though questionable in the UK right now!) especially given it's modifications for expedition travel. Just under 100K miles on the clock and we DO want to sell the vehicle (it was always our intention as we will not need such a specially prepared vehicle once we are settled and working in Oz). Any advice would be appreciated to help us decide which way to finally ship our car - ultimately we only want to pay a vehicle shipping fee once from where are now based in Indonesia - either north to UK or south OZ? The £2k cost would be to bring a container over to the Isle of Man from Uk as it would be empty, so what the shipping companies over here do is load all of our household stuff into their van for the ferry journey to England and then load into a container in either Liverpool or Southampton to save money. Guest Aussie in Scotland
Iron Chef....help......please. I emailed you and am very impatient. We have a 56 plate 307 and want to know how hard it is to import a car to Qld. We are eligible to import it. I have a quote for £1037 or there abouts to ship it RORO. I have no clue what I am doing and would hate to have my car crushed in Australia. I understand that your bread and butter is importing cars into the country. So..tell me if I am right....you charge $600 odd to do all of the work for me. You tell me what info you need and do all of the paperwork for me and liase with customs in Australia? You tell me when my car is ready to be collected? I love my car...know it sounds silly...but I am attached to it. (like the little pooch!!!) We leave here in less than 6 weeks and I need help and fast. Thanks, Robyn

Thanks....and sorry for the bingle...remind me not to let you drive my car. I have the form filled out and am just waiting for the rego docs and Pete's D/L to come back from DVLA (we just moved house and had to change the address...darn it!!) and then it will be all together. Before I proceed, is a Peugeout 307 suitable to import into Australia?
Iron Chef
As a personal import, pretty much anything is eligible to be imported, I doubt you'd lose too much on it here.
Guest Aussie in Scotland
Okay...paperwork all back from the DVLA. So...we want to import and have the necessary paperwork. I have been told it could take 6 - 8 weeks to get approval...I saw on the govt website that it is 15 days at the moment. Does that sound right? Also...the BIG question and I can't find the answer!! I read somewhere that it would cost a maximum of $3750 to ship a car inculuding the customs duties. Iron Chef...what do you think? Thanks in advance. Iron Chef
It depends a lot on the value of the car, you'd need to allow around $2400 just for shipping and customs valuation, that doesn't leave much for duty/GST...

Iron Chef
Oh if that's all it's worth then you're fine, that max is on the money for shipping and customs/duty.

Guest Sue1203
Hi all Just wondering if you can help...we are looking to bring our 2 cars with us to Perth and we are a bit confused with the documents that we have to put with it....to obtain the 100 points, we need to show that my oh has resigned from his job which isn't a problem because he is self employed and we just want to check that if we got a letter from his accountant to certify that he will be ceasing trading on certain date due to emigrating to Austrlia, will this suffice??? Also, in relation to cancelling our rental agreement, how do we show that we have done this? Would a letter from our landlord suffice?? Also, because we are now just waiting to hear about our visa, can we still send off the form? Our Agent advised that it should be any day now that we hear as we submitted the last piece of document to our Case officer just over 2 weeks ago. So am I right in saying that because we are still in our home country (which is Ireland)that the documents we provide are as follows: Completed application form Application fee Registration documents Proof of purchase Receipts of any work done? Copy of passorts Copy of drivers licence Letter from accountant re. ceasing trading Rental Cancellation Agreement I also have emails from schools that I emailed off regarding schools for my children, could I put these in also? And also, we have emails from Australian banks about opening up australian accounts, do we need to put these in? I am a bit confused because if you are still in your home country, how are you supposed to prove that you have a tax file number, medicare etc. Can anybody confirm, that we need to provide any other documents in our application please. Many thanks Confused Sue  x
