We are using an agent but I think that there are alot of people who have done it by themselves so Im probably not the best person to ask or even answer your question. I think if you read all the documentation carefully and give all the details they require you should be fine. We wil be applying for a defacto visa so we are more confident getting an agent to help us. We are gathering all the information ourselves and then the agent reviews it and sends it on but if you are comfortable with all of your information it may be an option to do it yourself. For us its more that she is familiar with the process and what the DIAC will accept and not accept and we arent familiar with it. If you have had problems with your agent already whats to say that you wont in the future. Maybe ask one of the agents on here im sure they will advise you.
