metal machinist, how to go about it

Recommended Posts

Hi my partner has been working in engine reconditioning and engine building for 10 years, we are looking at going onto a 175 under the title metal machinist, he doesnt have an nvq III, however i believe he can get an AQF III, while we are here in Oz.

He can get the AQF III under the title automotive specialist which falls under metal machinisit.

I wondered if any one has done it this way around and how much it cost to get the AQF III as he wont be doing a course, it will just be like and RPL.

Does anyone know about the tra aswell and how much getting the skills assessed once he has the AQF III is? also do u have any idea what they will ask?

We are both currently on WHVs as he was made redundant on a 457 twice and we feel getting the 175 will be the best option for the security.

Also once the visa application is in, does any one have a rough idea of how long until its granted.

Any help or info would be great as we seem to b going round in circles.

Thanx

:arghh:

Hi there,

I'd look at the CSL (critical skills list) and the occupations which the various states want before approaching TRA. From what I understand about mechanical engineering, metal machining, toolmaking etc I think it may be fairly easy to ask TRA for an occupation which would give you most the advantage for immigration rather than that which you may first think of as most appropriate. The 175 wait if you are not on the CSL is horrendous at the moment...even being MODL is no help...and there is speculation that MODL may be abondoned/replaced etc etc. We applied in July08 and our agent said it would be at least July 2010 if not significantly longer before we could expect a visa grant. Most 175 applicants are converting to 176 state sponsorship as that gets you priority processing. Of course for that your nominated occupation and the one TRA have certified you for has to be on a state list...and then you have to live in that state for 2 years . Our 176 took a year. Some states take longer than others to process applications. I think I'm right in saying SA is one of the quickest at the mo and that a visa grant for SA state sponsorship would probably take about 5 months from lodgement (maybe less if you are lucky). Check out the thread on Are you waiting for SA State Sponsorship.

Hope this has helped a bit.
