Hi John, Bridget here, Kev's wife.

I have worked at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) on Brisbane's northside for nearly 14 years. I secured a job within 3 days of arriving from UK as an "On Call" nurse then within a month was on the permanent "nursing support unit" which is a group of nurses who are permanently employed on a roster (off duty as it used to be called in UK) and are used to fill in for sick leave and high accuity needs. I am tellin you this to highlight how easy it was to gain employment at TPCH when I arrived. I then got a permanent position on the Cardiology and Heart failure and transplant unit 3 months later, having never worked in Cardiology.

There is a real culture of encourageing nurses to gain different experience at TPCH. So if Lisa came over here and got a job in one of the aged care units she would have no trouble at all up skilling to an acute ward as it is very positivly encouraged. At TPCH we have a large aged care sector. There is a 30 bedded Geriatric and Evaluation Unit (for slow stream rehab and people awaiting assessment for nursing home or ACAT assessment for their level of care needs. There is also a 26 bed acute rehab unit for all sorts of rehab needs- a very interesting and dynamic unit. Also there is the dementia unit which is tied in with community and does assessments, placement and respite. Also under the umbrella of Qld Health is a huge aged care facility at Sandgate called Eventide, right on the waterfront, and another smaller facility called Ashworth House, not far from TPCH.

So as you can see, there is plenty on offer for aged care. I do some shifts as Duty Nurse Manager at TPCH, which includes covering emergent leave in all areas, and I can assure you that we are always looking for nurses to work, in aged care and acute.

TPCH is a lovely facility to work at, and I am biased I guess, but it is a fairly small place compared to large general hospitals and maintains a friendly and supportive culture. We have just undergone expansion from being a speciality cardiothoracic hospital to having a general surgical unit and two general medical wards. Our Intensive care unit takes all the post Cardiac surgery patients, post heart and lung transplant patients and a lot of general ICU admissions. We dont take head or spinal injuries as the Princess Alexandra Hospital on the Southside specialises in spinal injuries. Our orthopeadic unit does all elective ortho procedures and will expand to take emergency admission pretty soon.

I guess I am selling the place well but I really mean it. If you are thinking of coming to Brisbane (northside) then I would highly recommend TPCH.

Please feel free to pose any questions that you may have. My work Email address is bridget_dickinson@health.qld.gov.au

regards,

Bridget.

Hey you know it was a term of endearment me old mate. You have been a rock and your advice is always appreciated (and your prawns)! Should have known that you were stringing me along so the jokes on me and sorry if I offended you.

Have you heard from Mark and Karen?

Well after 2 visits to the solicitors as he forgot to date it, the big white envelope will be winging itself to oz this morning. The solicitor knew someone at my station so when it was payment time he charged us £20 for certifying 12 docs. Result! Hopefully it should all be worth it and Lisa wont have to sit the IELTS test.

JOHN

John,

The trouble with mails and text is that one can only convey characters on screen, when I replied it was ment in a most light hearted way and no offence was taken or inferred. perhaps the use of a smiley would have put the text in the right tone!!

No I've not heard from M&K since returning to the uk.

A bit of one upmanship for you, as Tracey worked for a solicitor in the uk, we had all our certs done for nothing!!

Cheers

M

Well we have made a start! Lisa's Letter of Confirmation from the ANMC dropped onto the door mat this morning so that's the first hurdle done. She also sat the IELTS test on Saturday so we are waiting for the results. Just getting the docs together for the QLD state sponsorship and QLD nursing registration.

Thought I better do an update.

Well Lisa passed her IELTS first time. So we have sent off her Queensland Nursing Council Application. We have been told to not even bother applying for jobs until you have received it. Hopefully that should be here in the next few months.

We have also sent off for QLD State sponsorship. Hopefully we should get an answer from them soon. They said they were prioritising Nurses so hopefully it should not be too long.

We cant apply for 176 till January 7th 2010 as this is when Lisa has done a year as a Nurse. She has had some feedback from some Ozzie hospitals and they have said that to improve her chances of getting a job in Oz , she should think about changing her speciality. She is currently a Nurse on a Care of the Elderly ward at Colchester General Hospital. So she has an interview this afternoon for a Nursing position on a surgical ward.

And the biggest step of all.............We have decided to put the house on the market. The nosey ones of you will want me to put a link to the house so here it is

We had an open house on saturday and only one couple turned up. But I have had a call from the EA this morning and they want to come for a second viewing this afternoon. Cash buyer as well!

Well......

Lisa got the job! This will give her the nursing experience she needs to get a decent post in oz.

The prospective purchasers have just left. They took photos of everything and I mean everything. They said that they have seriously looked at 3 houses today and have one more to look at tomorrow but so far ours is the bestest. They are cash buyers and asked would we be prepared to be out by xmas. Dont want to put the mockers on it but it looks good.

Got this this morning:

Hi Lisa,

Your credit card details went through fine, you are now active as a registered nurse and eligible to practice in Queensland. Due to the postal strike in the UK I am sending this email to inform you of your registration as the documents could be delayed in reaching you. You can view the public register on our website (address below) to see that you are active, as can any prospective employer.

Kind Regards,

So another hurdle done.

JOHN
