Moving to Melbourne in March 09 to work in Collingwood. Looking to live in South Morang. Any info what the area is like and transport from here to the city?

Hi there,

South Morang is quite a way out from Collingwood, some people do commute from those outer areas (lots of new housing estates out there). Google South Morang, Victoria, and there will be some info there. Especially the local shire council homepage which comes under the the City of Whittlesea. We go to the Go Kart track up there and it takes us about 40 mins, but it is actually around 24Kms from the CBD of Melbourne on the highway. Very rural kind of 'atmosphere' if you like that? Good luck with it!

Hi

We moved over from Uk in May 2008 - we originally planned to live in Mornington or surrounding areas but within 3 days of being in Melbourne my Partner got a job in a northern suberb called Preston. As we were based in Frankston this was difficult. We looked at lots of areas in the North - one of which was Eltham - very glad we didnt opt for there now!

We looked at South Morang which is a good area also Mill Park lakes - there is a lot of building work and infrastructure being put in place at the moment. Eventually we bought a house in Epping. Not quite as 'up market' as South Morang but the house we bought was about $60K less than equivalent.

Epping is a good place to be as such not as picturesque as some suberbs but certainly worth a look. There is a large estate being built at the Northern end near us called Lindarum which might be worth a look for new houses.

I currently work in the CBD but am looking for something nearer home as I find the commute realistically takes about 3 hours out of my day. Collingwood is on the Epping and Hurstridge train lines and would take about 30 to 40 minutes from Epping - South Morang does not have a train line as yet but I believe they are extending the tram lines at some point. Any commute is a real bind. By car you would be in traffic for at least 40 minutes - they specialise in traffic lights at every junction over here - and Connex really are bad at running the train lines. So trains do get cancelled and in the heat of the last few weeks it was not fun!!!!

We use South Morang cart track and also my partner goes bush riding on his dirt bike a lot - although not so much for the foreseable for obvious reasons.

There are 2 major shopping centres and some minor ones at Epping and South Morang.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and keep in touch if you would like to get together when you arrive - we have had a hell of a year ( and its not been a year yet!). Happy to help you find out anything you need to know.

regards

Helen
