Entity
My son will be 11 in July and is currently in year 6 in the UK, he finishes junior school and starts secondary school in September. What year would he start secondary equivalent ‘high school’ if we were in Australia? Would it be year 7? Ive tried to google and can only find calculators for starting school. Thank you. AussieMum
My youngest turns 13 in August (born in 2006, so roughly two years older than your son) and is starting high school (Year 7) at the end of this month with his age cohort. Note that I'm in Victoria and other states might be different.
NickyNook
I think you're moving to NSW? If so, July birthdays are a bit hard to place. In theory, kids with birthdays up to the end of July (note this only applies to NSW) can start in state schools in the January /February of the year they have their 5th birthday. That means that your son, born in July 2008, could have started in kindergarten at a state school in 2013 and would therefore be in Year 6 in 2019 and start high school (Year 7) in 2020. So 4 months after he would start secondary school in the UK. However, there's always an issue with May/June/July birthdays - particularly boys. In NSW they would invariably have been held back and started school in the following year to avoid being the dreaded youngest in the year. Also all private schools would automatically start them in the following year as they all have their own earlier cut-off dates. That means that the bulk of boys the exact same age as your son will be in Year 5 in 2019 and not start high school until 2021.

Thank you so much. He was registered to start school before we left and they advised to hold him back so that makes complete sense. We are looking at NSW or possibly QLD. Is it different there do you happen to know?
