stockburn
Afternoon All (UK time) I am moving to Melbourne from the UK in just under 3 weeks, fly on the 31st so I am sure everyone who has done this realises I am equally stressed and excited! Will be initially living in Brunswick in an AirBNB for a month, will then be looking for my own place / possible apartment share. I am single, 37 year old male professional (In computing but I'm not that 'dull') looking for anyone that can explain the pitfalls of moving there or even some advice on good gyms, good bars, places to live and some good places to visit. Cheers Dave
leftyandstumpy
Hey Dave,We came over a couple years ago, living in Bayside. Would be more than happy to help with any info we can offer and I'm sure my hubby would be up for a beer once you arrive and settle in a bit!Sent from my iPhone using PomsinOz
evets
Brunswick/Fitzroy nice areas for socialising in, nice bars, coffee shops, restaurants, nightlife and close to Melbourne CBD. Probably classed as the hipster part of Melbourne. Should be quite easy to find shared accommodation around this part of town. Depending on what else you are looking at, South Yarra, Windsor, Prahran, Balaclava, Port Melbourne, Richmond may work. Accommodation can be hit or miss in Melbourne, quality wise. Since it is coming into to winter, bring some thermals and clothes to layer up on. The old art deco/brick houses while looking nice are crap to live in during winter as you WILL feel the cold, since they will usually/probably not have any heating unless you buy an electric heater. Newer builds will more than likely have ducted heating, but even that can be an issue depending on how the air is routed round the house. Pub culture is very different from the UK in Melbourne ie some bars do not even look like a pub from the outside, they look like they could be someones living room, others may just be a door leading up a few flights of stairs to the bar(you would never know unless someone told you about it or took you there). Buying a pot(half pint in UK terminology) is pretty normal. Public transport in all the areas I have mentioned above is pretty good.
stockburn
Thanks for all the info guys, I am just over two weeks into my move to Melbourne and so far enjoying it, took me an age to get over the jet lag and I am surprised at how cold it is but all part of the fun.
