  1. Hi! We've not got a group of lovely expats together as yet. We figure meet up with anyone new/old to Melbourne and add to the group as people arrive or spot our topic on the forum! We've made friends since arriving ourselves but it's always nice to make a few more We've nothing set in stone Saturday so if you would be up for a few drinks let us know! Otherwise lets try meet up one weekend soon.
  2. Hi Dave, We are similar age bracket.. well the hubby is the old one!! Shall pm you so we can arrange to meet up at some point. Cheers
  3. we had movers pack us up and get us here, I questioned how to specify what needed to be listed and above answers similar to what we had, they did mention they would pack any wooden items in a box (x amount of boxes) so that if the wooden items needed to be looked at then it would be easy for them to find what had been declared in that area and fumigated if customs felt was required. We also put down a drop sheet and cleaned the bottom of every pair of shoes we owned and wiped with bleach etc as OZ can be harsh the possibility of diseased soil being bought in. We also wiped hubby's golf clubs and golf balls clean so that we wouldn't have to be charged fumigation. We were advised by company we shipped through (and almost all 6 of the companies I had come quote) that cleaning above items and anything that maybe a threat to OZ (wood etc) is worth making the effort and labelling well for customs. Good luck with the move, ours was crazy fast and arrived in 6 weeks, we had to put in storage due to not having arrived in OZ at that point!
  4. I'm assuming your autumn not ours since it's almost over this side Let us know when you have arrived and we can catch up for a drink!
  5. Hey Dave, We came over a couple years ago, living in Bayside. Would be more than happy to help with any info we can offer and I'm sure my hubby would be up for a beer once you arrive and settle in a bit! Sent from my iPhone using PomsinOz
  6. You'll be in the same boat we were in a little over two years ago! Well we'll be here so feel free to touch base or ask anything if you need info at all, more than happy to help and catch up for a drink once you finally make it to OZ!
  7. Brilliant, I vote Seaford! Bayside is lovely. Safe trip over and def touch base once your here and ready to get out for a drink!
  8. I'm new to pomsinoz but have visited family here many times. I know and understand the problem of wanting new friends in  a new, town, city., or country. My advice to people is visit the many sports and social clubs which exist in every town and suburb. Membership is open to everyone and the facilities are excellent and cater for different tastes and interests. I've visited many different clubs and I've been amazed at what they offer. Some of the many things are dancing, TVs  showing many different sports,  bingo, pokies, raffles and draws to support the clubs, fabulous restaurants and cafes serving discounted drinks and meals if you are members, and last but not least entertainment in many forms. If you're interested in sport and have kids what better place to start than a sports club, surf, football, rugby, aussies rules, etc etc.   Your kids will make new friends and so will you. There's  also the services clubs again with great facilities.  New members are welcome and it's usually only a couple of dollars or even free to join. Try a few different ones until you find ones where you feel comfortable and the most welcome I'm sure you will be glad you did.

Thanks, we're well aware of all of the above and have joined many a club however we have found bayside to be a little more pretentious and it's just not for us hence the post on pomz hoping to meet some more like minded people that hopefully don't feel it's about what they do and what they have!  We're prettey laid back and just keen to connect with some people (hopefully with some things in common)that want to catch up, enjoy a laugh and hopefully from there gain a friendship.

We are child free so that alley isn't an option, but gosh the people that have kids I have to admit i'm sometimes a little envious of how much easier it might be to meet others through all the activities kids do now adays!

Thanks again for the advise, we'll keep plodding along but we just always feel it's silly not to put ourselves out on here too especially since we know others will be coming or have come over to the same situation :)

  14. Hi all, We are in the Bayside area, keen to start meeting and hopefully making some new friends. Arrived in Melbourne late Feb and have just secured work so now it's time to make friends for our life in Melbourne! This is a brand new adventure for both my hubby (Scotsman) and myself (the aussie) as I have never lived in VIC either! I know we're not officially East Melbourne but very up for meeting some of you regardless.
