Gaining a Trade Qualification in Oz? - TRA's Job Ready Program

Semp

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am looking at the possibility of obtaining a cert III trade qualification (Couple of trades that interest me, haven't decided on one in particular yet) in Oz.

From what I understand if the occupation the qualification relates to is on the SOL you can go through TRA's Job Ready program and gain a positive skills assessment for immigration.

My question is, if the occupation comes off the SOL list while studying, are their any other options/pathways to gaining a skills assessment in Australia, or would I need to gain post work experience outside of the country? Not sure how this would work as I would have an Australian qualification, and am unsure if/how it would be recognised elsewhere?

Thanks for any help :)

Back when I did the job ready program you had to have studied for two years with a minimum of cert 4 I believe to get a visa.

My job was taken off the list part way through and the only way for me to stay was employer sponsored. It was mega stressful and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I studied a diploma in horticulture. Employer sponsored is possible without the skills assessment. The 457 doesn't need it for many jobs, although depending on your job they will probably require more than a cert 3.

Then after two years there are the 186 or 187 visas. I got the Rsms visa before you needed the skills assessment for direct entry. Even with a willing employer it was very hard.

I found this on TRA's website, but don't fully understand it?

http://www.tradesrecognitionaustralia.gov.au/Programs/457/Pages/Eligibility.aspx

Not all trade occupations are listed here, and only certain "nominated" countries are shown to be eligible for the 457 skills assessment. Does this mean that if your occupation isn't listed as one of these, you don't need a skills assessment to be eligible for the 457? Also, I'm not from any of the countries listed (I'm Canadian)...

For non-trade (general) skilled occupations the BIBP sometimes require a full pre-migration skills assessment and for some occupations they always call for one. For trade occupations for which a '457' skills assessment is not available, the sometimes ask for a full skills assessment.

The "sometimes" makes me nervous... Is there certain criteria they use to determine if they will ask for a full skills assessment, or is it left to the case officers discretion?

What's the difference between a 457 skills assessment and a general skills assessment?

Also, if I did choose one of the occupations on that list, I'm not from any of those countries listed anyways, so would I still be in the same boat?

Thanks for any help :)

You are wise to research this thoroughly before committing to a program to ensure that this is the best path for you. The normal path to obtain trade qualifications in Australia is via a formal apprenticeship where the apprentice, employer and training provider enter into a joint training contract which can last up to three to four years. Due to the length of the contract generally only existing permanent residents and citizens are eligible for such an apprenticeship.

Alternatively you may be able to access a vocational Cert III program on a student visa in a limited range of occupations but in order to complete the work experience requirements of the Job Ready Program you may need to commit to a period of post-study work experience through a another visa (eg 485).

Clearly obtaining an Australian qualification and corresponding work experience can contribute to your competitiveness in the skilled migration program but you need to look carefully at the overall costs, compared to obtaining your trade qualifications and experience in your home country.

Hi Richard,

I completely agree, and am trying to research as much as possible before committing to anything.

Our apprenticeship program works exactly the same here in Canada, and I have considered obtaining a trade ticket here, and then looking at migration options.

It would take me 4 years to become a fully licensed trade person here, and then another 2 (or 3?) years of post qualification experience to be able to obtain a positive skills assessment, so 7 years in total... I haven't ruled it out but that's a long time. There are obvious benefits as I would be financially better off while in school (lower domestic tuition fees, working in the trade as an apprentice, etc.) but it still comes with the risk of my trade occupation coming off the SOL list while I am training, and then not being able to apply via GSM. It looks like a 457 wouldn't be out of the question (would like clarification on this still), so I would still have some options left, but that's still on the table whether I complete the trade ticket at home or in Oz...
