  1. FYI - for anyone else ever in a similar situation, I didn't have to re-apply for my visa before entering Australia... They didn't care. I called DIBP and they didn't even want me to fill out the "change in circumstances" form, that I thought I would for sure need to. I entered Oz on the same visa I had applied for and been granted for the original course that I had deferred. I do still have to re-apply before the old visa expires, as the old one is not valid long enough for me to complete the new course dates, but not before entering Oz.
  2. Can an accountant graduate on a 485 grad visa apply directly for a 189 with no work experience, as long as they have 60+ points? Doesn't look like CPA requires work experience for a positive skills assessment? https://www.cpaaustralia.com.au/become-a-cpa/migration-assessment/criteria-and-requirements
  3. I cant find it on DIBP's site, but just doing a quick search, 90 days before course start date seems to be widely accepted as the norm... Regardless of that, could a MARA please chime in here if you don't mind clearing this up? If I need to apply for another visa before I arrive, do I need to have the current one cancelled or can I just apply for another one with a new CoE, with the old one automatically cancelled when the new one is granted?
  4. I wouldn't be missing any of my course... Id simply be moving my start date back two months. I believe you're allowed to arrive three months before your course starts. I'd be arriving in late November with a revised course start in January. Original visa was granted in September.
  5. International student here. If I defer my course start date a few months, and as a result obviously move my completion date back, do I need to re-apply for my student visa before I start my course, or can I start the course on the visa already approved, and simply apply again later on for the visa to be extended with a new CoE? Thanks
  6. Hi Richard, I completely agree, and am trying to research as much as possible before committing to anything. Our apprenticeship program works exactly the same here in Canada, and I have considered obtaining a trade ticket here, and then looking at migration options. It would take me 4 years to become a fully licensed trade person here, and then another 2 (or 3?) years of post qualification experience to be able to obtain a positive skills assessment, so 7 years in total... I haven't ruled it out but that's a long time. There are obvious benefits as I would be financially better off while in school (lower domestic tuition fees, working in the trade as an apprentice, etc.) but it still comes with the risk of my trade occupation coming off the SOL list while I am training, and then not being able to apply via GSM. It looks like a 457 wouldn't be out of the question (would like clarification on this still), so I would still have some options left, but that's still on the table whether I complete the trade ticket at home or in Oz...
  7. The "sometimes" makes me nervous... Is there certain criteria they use to determine if they will ask for a full skills assessment, or is it left to the case officers discretion? What's the difference between a 457 skills assessment and a general skills assessment? Also, if I did choose one of the occupations on that list, I'm not from any of those countries listed anyways, so would I still be in the same boat?
  8. I replied with a link but its not letting me post... (EDIT... 9. I found this on TRA's website, but don't fully understand it? http://www.tradesrecognitionaustralia.gov.au/Programs/457/Pages/Eligibility.aspx Not all trade occupations are listed here, and only certain "nominated" countries are shown to be eligible for the 457 skills assessment. Does this mean that if your occupation isn't listed as one of these, you don't need a skills assessment to be eligible for the 457? Also, I'm not from any of the countries listed (I'm Canadian)...
  10. Hi Blossom, What trade/qualification did you take? I didn't think an employer could sponsor you if you didn't already have a positive skills assessment?
  11. Hi all, I am looking at the possibility of obtaining a cert III trade qualification (Couple of trades that interest me, haven't decided on one in particular yet) in Oz. From what I understand if the occupation the qualification relates to is on the SOL you can go through TRA's Job Ready program and gain a positive skills assessment for immigration. My question is, if the occupation comes off the SOL list while studying, are their any other options/pathways to gaining a skills assessment in Australia, or would I need to gain post work experience outside of the country? Not sure how this would work as I would have an Australian qualification, and am unsure if/how it would be recognised elsewhere? Thanks for any help
