If he turns 12 before 30 April 2017 he would enter yr 7 (first year high school) in 2017. However if his birthday is anywhere between Feb and end April you may be counselled to put him into year 6 in 2017 because it is often better to have more maturity. Don't compare with UK just go with the age cohort. So your son could be entering either yr5 or yr 6 at the end of this year when you arrive.
