Hi We are currently going down the Visa process have never been to Oz before we are a young family at first we was thinking of heading to Perth but have read it is quite isolated and expensive. We are now looking at emigrating to Queensland near the sunshine coast. my husband is a carpenter understand the commute is about an hour to Brisbane. Where there is lot of jobs.. We was looking at a suburb called Buderim does anyone live there what is it like for schools, rentals, general living crime etc?? We in two minds maybe to come here or venture abit closer to Brisbane? Not sure if anyone could give me any advise be great..

I would try and venture a bit closer to Brisbane. The traffic on the M1 (the Bruce Highway) is heavy in peak traffic. Your husband would have to leave home at 5am in the morning to beat the traffic, it's that bad.

Have you considered North Lakes, Mango Hill or Redcliffe?

Buderim is a lovely spot and it has a large family and retired community.

However, I agree that traffic is not ideal for working in Brisbane. The Bruce Highway is regularly in gridlock due to many accidents and sheer volume of traffic. It is on the top 20 list of the most dangerous roads in the world based on accident stats. I would recommend somewhere Bay side or those previously mentioned.

5am is not unusual here though for people to go leave for work. People like to get an early start here. Most construction sites and up and running by 6 / 6.30 as it is a little cooler to work at that time.

We have friends with young children who live there, they love it and both adults have found work not too far away (one is a plumber / drainer, the other doing shop work), if you are lucky a commute to Brisbane may not be necessary as it would be one hell of a hike up and down the highway every day.

i live in buderim with my husband and 3 boys (3yrs, and twin 10yrs). they attend buderim school and it is amazing, very community orientated. the drive to and from brisbane can be a little gridlock mornings and arvo, but also depends what time you go down and come back. rentals are about $400-$450per week for 4 bed houses but it does vary and crime and living in generally great i hardly ever hear of any crime going on in buderim. i personally would not live in Brisbane. I have alot of people in our circle who have all gotten visas and moved over from pommy land and they wouldn't leave.

@lauraj1988 it is a stressful process but hopefully worthwhile. We are flying on 4th January but moving to Gold Coast.

I'll be honest and say we loved the look of Mango hill and the estate being built and the school there. There is a new train line under construction but my hubbys family are south and south east brisbane so we decided it was too far from them. Yes the road into Brisbane is a nightmare adn we have friends at Michelton and they suggested not going north of Strathpine due to the commute but as people say you may be lucky and get job locally so will only go into Brisbane for some things occasionally and not regularly. Same as where you are now, I assume you are in London very rarely to shop / sightsee?

Look forward to hearing how you get on good luck x

I do see the rents seem cheaper north lakes/ mango hill way? where abouts in the Uk are you from? we have such a mix bag of emotions I think it down just to the unknown I want the children to go to a good school with plenty to do of weekend I feel were rescrited by weather here in UK. we quite an outdoor family we have a boat and in summer we take the children out camping etc. How far is Buderim from the gold coast/ sunshine coast? Not really London we are right by Heathrow airport. What are yours and your husband's trade if you don't mind me asking? Be nice that you have family there also ;-)

If he is used to and happy with commuting and an early riser then you can be a little flexible. I commute from Gold Coast to Brisbane every day (mostly by train and it doesn't bother me. When we lived on the Sunshine Coast though I did find the 100k on the Highway very tough every day. I was commuting further north though so might be easier the other way.
