Hi, I'm moving to Brisbane in December and looking to move to the following suburbs Wooloowin/Ascot/Windsor/Newmarket/Hamilton. Can anyone offer any insider information on what it is like to live there. We are planning to rent for six months in one of these areas first.

Thanks

I will provide comment on Ascot and Hamilton as we have lived at both.

Hamilton, a water front borough which extends and abuts Asoct. Hamilton dockside is booming with lots of high rises being finished with loads more planned. Hamilton does not have a train station served locally by Ascot Station which is a part time line running to 7.30pm only. Being riverside there is Brett's Wharf city cat which is about 40mins to CBD. Traffic is difficult thanks to Kingsford Smith Drive which is expected to get more difficult if improvement works get instructed.

Ascot, set back from the river, mostly hilly but flat along its south edge, Ascot is the richest borough in Brisbane. Ascot is a borough of 2 halves, the hilly section has mult million dollar properties and where politicians etc call home. Views are great and it is quite green with many tree lined streets. The Southern edge which abuts Hamilton is flat and contains the racecourses and racecourse road which has plenty of shops and restaurants. Prices are a little more realistic, sits closer to Ascot Station and is served well by 300 and 301 bus routes which are cheap and 30mins to CBD. By car you have the choice of Kingsfordsmith Drive or Sandgate Road, both poor.

Wooloowin is slightly to the North of Ascot, has a station and is an up and coming borough which is mostly queenslanders although blocks are being built. One of the first boroughs which truly feels outside of the city but is still within easy reach.

My personal opinions.

I live in Ascot (lower) and can testify to the sentiments of @srg73

Ascot and Hamilton areas are both good areas. Very quiet generally and very safe.

Something I am noticing more and more along the Hamilton/Ascot border is the slow but steady subdivision going on, bulldozing of older queenslander properties into lower rise apartment blocks.

Windsor, Ashgrove, Wooloowin also very nice areas and well connected with the city, but perhaps less intense house price pressure.

If we stay longer term, I imagine we'll move to one of the above areas.

Thanks for your responses, they have been a great help. One more question though......Does Wooloowin and Windsor have many shops/cafes/restaurants/bars etc?

Windsor has a row of shops/cafes/restaurants on Kedron Brook Road and Wooloowin has a few on Junction Rd, plus the Kedron Park Hotel (a big pub). Neither are particularly well known for cafes/restaurants/bars but Windsor probably has the better options. Actually I think the Breakfast Ck Hotel is in Windsor so that gives it extra points for having decent steak.

I live in Wooloowin near to the station, actually have a lot of options. Junction road, Sandgate road (Clayfield and Albion) areas. In fact 2 new places have popped up in the last couple of weeks. Also the train is so handy you can get to other areas for food very easily. It's a good mixture of having options close by and transport to get into more lively areas.

Breakfast Creek hotel isn't in Windsor, it is basically in Albion, next to the racetrack and close to Hamilton. The Albion hotel is also good for a drink, otherwise most the local places are more restaurant than bars. If I want other bars I head to Newstead or Teneriffe.

Thanks all for your responses. We know we want to live on the Northside but it is just selecting the right suburb. Where we live now we have a good selection of shops/cafes/restaurants and pubs within walking distance and I know i'm unlikely to find that in Brisbane but i just don't want to feel isolated and there is nothing there.

I don't want it to be crazy busy but just as long as there is a pub (important)/a couple of cafes/restaurants and a few shops that would be great, plus a park to walk the dogs.

We are also looking at Newmarket and Wilston which sound like good options - any help on these suburbs?

Sorry if I keep coming back with more questions...............

Wilston and Newmarket both nice places that would tick that box.

Seriously the area of Clayfield/ Wooloowin by Kalinga park would be a great area for dogs. In fact a couple of new cafe's/restaurants have opened the last few weeks in that area. Here are some restaurants/cafes...

Plus lots more smaller coffee shops.

For the pub I usually go to the Albion hotel (Albion is really booming at mo for cafe's and restaurants).
