Nurse with a diploma nd a degree ....registration question :)

Hiya folks, I have a little question regarding registration to be a nurse if anyone knows or has experience.

We are toying with the idea to move to Australia next year on a visa based on my wife's occupation as a Nurse Practitioner. She was originally with a diploma in 2003 but has since studied to Masters Degree level (Health Care Practices). The diploma wasn't topped up so she holds both a diploma and a degree.

Would her application for registration as a nurse be assessed on her diploma or masters degree? The visa agents don't seem to know and was wondering if anyone here has had any experience of this.

Thanks

Hi smogzy,

Firstly I would seriously recommend getting an agent that knows this and can advise with the most up to date information etc.

In order to move permanently as a nurse with a degree your wife could apply as the main applicant on a 189 permanent residency visa. Unfortunately diplomas are no longer recognised for migration, so she would have to provide evidence of her degree and her experience (you can claim extra points for years in profession) to the Australian nursing and midwifery council (ANMAC) for a skills assessment.

A positive skills assessment means she may then apply for PR providing you have enough points which will depend on your age and English language ability amongst other things.

There's a wealth of knowledge on here where there's always someone or a previous thread that will be able to help!

Hiya Louloubelle,

We are still in the process of applying but using a little loophole in the system.

We enquired with Anmac and a few agencies and it seems it a very hit or miss affair. Even though Paula (my wife) has now a masters degree, 15 years experience and other untold qualifications we couldn't get a clear yes or no answer without actually applying. As you possibly already know if they don't accept you original qualification then they want you to do a very expensive bridging course (IRON) in Australia.

We spoke to a few people who have been in the same situation as us and got rejected by Anmac but then successfully applied to New Zealand (who do take into account other postgraduate qualifications) and then transferred their NZ registration to an Australian one using the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition scheme. You don't need to set foot in NZ to do this and we know 100% it works. The only down side is that you have to do the IELTS test for the NZ registration which is £140 plus the NZ registration fee (NZ$650) and then the TTMR fee (AU$300). More expensive than a direct application to Australia but then a dam site cheaper than the IRON course (AU$12,000).

The IELTS test is our stumbling block atm and she has just missed out by half a point on the reading section. She is resitting in November so fingers crossed this time.

Good luck in your applicaition and let us knwo how you get on. If you have any more questions then fire away...

Exactly the same situation here. Qualified with a Dip HE in Mental Health Nursing, and topped up with a Bsc (Hons) Health and Professional Practice. I asked our migration agent (Go Matilda) and they said we shouldn't have a problem with registration...hoping they're right!x

Thanks @smogzy that is really useful information and might need to be our plan B if ANMAC say no. I am currently using go Matilda and they have given me the same advice as you @Bushpiglet that as long as you have a degree or equivalent in a health related subject and meet all the 8criteria I should be ok. So I will patiently wait 12 and hope its good news, I will keep you posted. I expect I will be wait a while to hear anything from AHPRA!!

I also have foundation degree in adult nursing 2004 as my initial and then completed BSc community health studies -district nursing 2012. Our agent Katherine @ getmetooz hasn't told us they could refuse due to diploma, I just thought as long as I had a degree in nursing of some sort I would be ok, I'm a bit worried now.

My Anmac forms arrived over there last week so on the waiting game too.

I am trying to stay positive, it's so hard to know what ANMAC will do as there criteria is so open to interpretation, I have heard that as long as you have a degree or equivalent in a health related subject we should be ok. My agent sent all my paperwork off last week so we should here around the same time. I do t even know if my teacher status will be recognised over there either as I was hoping to go into education. Let the wait begin and hope we here something before Xmas.

I qualified in 2002 with Dip HE. I then went on to do a Bsc Health promotion. I really want to relocate but the idea of doing another top up nursing degree just makes me mad. I am reluctant to apply to Ahpra as I think I might be turned down and would have wasted my time and money. Does anyone know if they accept any degree???

Hi Julia and Lou,

criterion 3 says that the degree must be accredited by nmc to be of value to Australia. Unsure if I have interpreted this properly. It is so frustrating. Do not think I will get reg because my Msc health care practice is not accredited externally (nmc). 5 years studying for nothing! Application sent so now the waiting game!

I'm confused by the while thing it's so unclear. My MSc was in health professional education (teaching) which gained me teacher status on the nmc register but is not a AHPRA standard so i am also waiting. They have asked for loads of additional info regarding my msc so fingers crossed its eniugh.i will keep you posted

Hi all,

Im in a similar boat as you guys. has anyone had any answers yet from Ahpra?

I have a dipHE in MH nursing and then went onto gain a BSc (hons) in community specialist practice (health visiting). From other posts in lots of other forums Ive read that as long as you have a degree then its ok. However.... my dilemma is this...

Criteria 8: regarding drugs administration, pharmacology etc... is what I did at diploma level enough or do I need to evidence I also did this during my degree. (I didn't - so in trouble if I need to have done so).

I keep reading about people completing top up degrees - do you also do pharmacology modules as part of this or does your previous study count - even at diploma level?

Sorry for confusing post... I'm sooo confused.... any help welcomed...

Hi @jamesandsarah

I'm still waiting to here anything from ANMAC and AHPRA, they have both asked for bits off additional information but nothing on section 8. I would struggle to evidence that, I've done a bit of rapid tranq training (I'm mental health trained) but I suppose I would have to ask the university to write a supporting letter as I help facilitate the meds management exams and I'm currently writing a journal article on student OSCEs.

I've heard from some people that a BSc in a health related subject is enough but I'm not getting my hopes up until I hear from AHPRA

I will keep you informed and good luck

Now you've survived AHPRA :) Am I right to assume they were satisfied with criteria 8 being met just by your diploma? Also, have you been granted supervision conditions with your registration or any notation?

Yes no problem with criteria 8 at all which surprised me as I trained back in 2002 and according to my transcript we did very little in terms of med mangment and the only additional training I have done since is yearly rapid tranq updates!!!! I didn't send any CPD either I just cited what hid done on my CV.

I don't have any conditions either which I thought at the very least I would, just have 1 year to present myself in person to the office with my ID. I think you will be just fine.
