Anyone ship a car lately...how much was it valued as landed?

Hi everyone, I'm shipping a valuable car in the next couple of weeks. I was wondering if anyone had done it lately? I've been looking at the carsales website and then comparing to the redbook to get an idea of what the car is worth. The difference is substantial...about $50k. Was your car valued according to the redbook or what they are selling for locally?

Mikk, curious to know how you are shipping it ? Being an import may have a slight reduced value to the red book or carsales.com.au, but you can't go wrong with a $50k difference. There is another member here, who's net profit was 0, but he had the use of the car for 2 years i think.

Hi, I think the guy to talk to is Iron Chef, he runs Iron Lady imports. The car will be valued at a bit above 50% of the full australian price for customs because when the car enters australia it is not yet complianced, nor has it been hit with the 10% GST or 5% import duty etc. So if the car is currently selling on carsales for $50K then it might be $25K for the customs value. People like Iron Chef can give you a correct customs evaluation according to the formula set out by the authorities.

Thanks for the replies. I had a look at Iron Chef and his formula which makes perfect sense. I bought the car 2 years ago for £37k, carsales.com.au the car seems to be selling for around $110k but red book says it's worth $149k. I really hope they use the UK value and the formula Iron Chef uses. I'll update this thread when the car gets there in August.

Mikk1975, if you want, just email me via the website and I can run the details through our calculator - I can give you the customs value and the expected taxes. Bear in mind the customs value is much lower than the market value, which means you save money. Hence why it's always wise to get a valuation done. Any valuer worth their salt will save you far more than the cost of the valuation!

I am looking at doing this and found a great shipping calculator - it seems like a complex process and couldn't decide whether to ship our beloved beetle back with us, this website you just put in the car details and it told us how much the shipping, testing, taxes etc would be straight away. Decided it is definitely worth it, especially as we don't have to pay import taxes, just need to decide whether to ship the car separately with a car specialist or just with household stuff
