You need to convince me that you want to work for my company.

Tell me how your experience is relevant to what we do, how it will benefit me, and showing you've researched what we do a bit helps immensely.

Just wanted to know what sort of things do you put in your cover note for a cv. My oh is a painter and decorator

The usual advice is to say, look at the ad you're applying for, and see if they're asking for any specific skills or abilities. Let's say they're looking for someone with their own car, tools, have a blue card and experience in large commercial fitouts. Then the letter would go:

"I wish to apply for the position of ..... advertised in....

As you can see from my attached resume, my qualifications and experience are ideally suited to this role as follows:

- I worked for x years at (company), specialising in large-scale commercial fitouts

- I can provide my own vehicle and tools

- I hold a blue card

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions on ......

Yours sincerely etc "

You just vary what the points are to suit what the employer is asking for. If the employer isn't asking for anything in particular, or if it's a spec application, think of a short list of highlights that would impress (no more than four or five items).

Many employers won't even look at the CV's so the idea is to highlight the best bits in the cover letter.
