Visa Confusion - 457 Advice

Hi All, I'm looking to move to Sydney in October 2015. My area of work is listed on the CSOL list (http://www.immi.gov.au/work/pages/skilled-occupations-lists/csol.aspx) and I believe I am right in thinking that the 457 visa is the right one for me, but would love some advice.

I'm wondering if i should be applying for jobs or doing some visa related paper work first or what my next steps should be. I realise it's 8 months away, but i would like to book flights soon and get the ball rolling sooner rather than later.

Should i just wait until closer to the time to look for a company that can sponsor me or how do people tend to sort themselves out in advance?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Without knowing your occupation and a few other details such as qualifications and age and whether you've already had a Working Holiday or Work and Holiday visa, it's going to be difficult to help with any really useful information. A 457 may well be the best visa for you but there may also be better alternatives.

Thanks for the reply. I've never had any kind of visa before by the way. I'm 27 and work in advertising. I have a bachelors degree and masters degree.

Have you looked at the skilled occupation list or consolidation occupation list and all the jobs roles and what is required to see if you fit any of them? If you have which ANZSCO code are you interested in and which list is it on. This can further help members give you options :)

You need to work out which occupation on the CSOL best fits your qualifications and work experience and there's not much we can do to help you with that. Check the CSOL for each likely looking occupation then refer to ANZSCO to see if the task description for that job is a good fit with your background.

Then, get yourself a subclass 417 Working Holiday visa, come to Australia within 12 months of getting it and be prepared to spend the next 12 months hunting for an employer who is willing and eligible to sponsor you for a 457 (or better still, a 186 ENS which is a permanent visa).

If you're fortunate enough to find an employer who is willing to sponsor you for a Direct Entry 186, you will need a positive skills assessment from the assessing authority responsible for assessment of your occupation. When you've identified the CSOL occupation you would be nominating, you could do some initial investigation now of whether you can meet their requirements. Don't apply for skills assessment now (as you may never need it) but it would be useful to know if you're likely to be able to get a positive assessment before you start looking for a sponsor. The assessing authority for each occupation is listed in column 3 on the CSOL and there's a link at the top of the CSOL page that takes you to their websites.

Thanks for your input. Very much appreciate your help. I had a look at the list and would be eligible for all of the following: (225111 Advertising Specialist), (225113 Marketing Specialist), (131111 Advertising and Public Relations Manager), (131112 Sales and Marketing Manager).

From reading other responses it looks like my best bet is to try and find work before i head over through a 457 visa if possible. If that doesn't work, it looks like heading over on a 417 visa and then looking for 457 sponsorship while i'm there is another option. I'm thinking it would be easier to get work while i am out there anyway.

Thanks a lot for all of your advice. Between reading different blogs and chatting to family and friends, I have been hearing different reports from everyone and it's nice to have it all laid out in simple terms.

If you have a Jo on the CSOL you can look on the immi website and see if you can make 60 points to apply for the PR 190 visa?

South Australia is currently willing to sponsor Sales and Marketing Managers for the Skilled Nominated subclass 190 visa. If you could get a positive skills assessment from AIM and a score of 60 points on the points test (including the 5 points you get for the state sponsorship), that would get you to Australia on a permanent visa. You are supposed to stay in the sponsoring state for 2 years but that is a moral obligation rather than a visa condition.

I agree with this post! That's the best option for you my friend. I am 28 from US and also was looking into different options and after talking to MA the best option was to get Working Holiday Visa for 12 months... planning to find employer that extend my stay through sponsorship (457 visa). It's hard to get but it's possible. I am flying to Brisbane in two (2) weeks! I also have BA in Business Administration and worked as HR Generalist/Recruitment for over 6 years... so hoping to find something. :))) Good luck!
