rt00021
Hey Guys, 1) For how many months one can drive a car with an Indian driving licence (in VIC/NSW mainly)? 2) I have also read somewhere that one needs to carry driving licence verification letter from respective RTO in India from where the licence was issued. Is it must? If yes, Isn't it a hassle? 3) To get a DL verification letter from the RTO, is personal presence required or someone can do it on your behalf? I am not living in the city from where the licence was issued, hence worried. It will be good if someone can mention the process of getting Australian DL in brief with respect to Indian DL and related documents. Thanks a lot. MaggieMay24
Have you read the information that's available on the Victoria and NSW websites? http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Licences/NewToVictoria/OverseasDriversLicences.htm http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/licensing/newtonsw/international_drivers.html
Ozmaniac
As a Permanent Resident, you have 6 months in Victoria and 3 months in NSW in which to get a local licence. If you fail to do so within those timeframes, you will be driving unlicensed so you will be breaking the law AND are not covered by insurance. If your licence is in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by an English translation. The translation is at your own cost. VicRoads only accepts translations completed by: a NAATI accredited (any level) translator an appropriate consulate in Australia OR you must have a valid and current International Driving Permit. NSW has similar (though slightly different) requirements. Because your licence is from India, you are not exempt from testing before you can be issued with an Australian licence. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/exeres/7E10681C-4AA4-4E6C-9D2E-EC4363EDEFAB,frameless.htm?NRMODE=Published#exempt Victoria http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/licensing/newtonsw/international_drivers.html NSW
