London accomodation

So I'm moving back to the UK in early July. I need to spend the first 10 days or so in London in order to register with my employment agency, open a bank account etc etc. I don't know anyone there and was looking for good (relatively cheap) options for accomodation? I'm 30 so a bit older than the typical backpacker crowd but not wanting to spend more than about 50 pound a night if possible - was thinking that unis often rent out rooms don't they? Any ideas?

Go to your local library and have a look at the travel guides for the UK - budget ones like Lets Go or Lonely Planet. They will have some cheaper options (including uni contacts). These days you can book a long way ahead and get a good rate at http://www.travelodge.co.uk Youth hostels are not as cheap as they were.

You will also find cheap rates on http://www.booking.com . Put your dates in and say you want a single in London and put the results in price order. The reviews of the cheap hotels are all there on the same site.

Good luck!

There is no question London is expensive, I have been using Airbnb a lot recently to get rooms there - I am typically paying 100 GBP a night but I have my standards ;) And need to be within walking distance of the Tate Modern/Globe Theatre area which is tourist central so probably more expensive.

If you are okay being further out then you can get some nice places on Airbnb for under 50 GBP and if you were willing in share a flat/house for under 30.

The link below is for the second two weeks in July, self-contained places

There is no standard Airbnb letting so read reviews carefully, some people are literally staying with friends whilst you stay at their places so the flat is chock a block full of their stuff, others are 'commercial' lettings and don't even provide a tea bag! Read previous reviews carefully so you know what to expect or ask questions - I have only had one bad experience and that was when I booking was cancelled at short notice otherwise all the hosts have been great.

Otherwise this place always looks pretty decent http://www.lsevacations.co.uk/Accommodation/Bankside-House/Bankside-House.aspx#sthash.YfEs4oVN.dQ8ncHki.dpbs

Hi canadianaussie,

I know a very good womens hostel in central location in London. £35 per night incl. breakfast and dinner. They close on the 12th of July but you may spend few nights there if you lucky. Info. Queen Alexandra's House, Kensington. Good Luck
