Guest nastasia
Hello, may I know in what cirscumstances is somebody's citizenship ceased? Does staying out of Australia for let's say more than 40 years make an australian citizen lose his/her citizenship?
Skippy1
Simple answer is No...................but ......................there is always a "BUT" .......................read on for the few exceptions http://www.citizenship.gov.au/learn/law-and-policy/legis_changes/revocation.htm/
Seppo
If you acquired another citizenship, as an adult, between January 26, 1949 and April 4, 2002, then you automatically forfeited your Aussie citizenship under the old Section 17 of the Australian Citizenship Act of 1948. If this is not the case, you are probably still fair dinkum. That being said, as Skippy1 pointed out, there is always a 'but', especially in Aussie immigration/citizenship law. I would take a look at the Australian Citizenship Act of 2007 in its entirety, including the most recent amendments to that document. Also, a phone call to your local consulate or the Embassy will get a definitive answer.
