187 / 190

Recommended Posts

I've asked this on Perth Poms but it seems a bit busier here.

We're meeting a migration agent tomorrow to discuss options. Given our age, 45, we can accumulate 60 points on the 190 visa, if we score Superior English and obtain 5 points for a state nomination.

With this in mind, wouldn't it be easier to go down the route of a 187 regional nomination (we hold UK passports).

Given these two options, what benefits are there to the 190 track?

Thanks,

Chris

You are doing spectacularly well to get 60 points at age 45. You say "we" though, what do you mean by that, it needs to be the main applicant that meets the points, not a combined total. Just thought I would mention it as it is so unusual.

You only need 60 points for a visa and if you secure state sponsorship you will get an invite, so I don't know why you would look any further. It really is not comparable to the 187, you have to find a willing and able employer sponsor and jump through more hoops. It would be supremely more difficult to get a 187, I wouldn't even think about it if a 190 was on offer. As I say though, am curious about how you managed it, do you have a phd? Have you lived in Australia before?

Thanks Rupert. Here's the breakdown, and it's the same for either my wife or myself:

Superior English: 20 points

Skilled Employ at least 8 years: 15 points

Bachelor degree: 15 points

Partner skill: 5 points

Nomination by state/territory 5 points

Obviously we've assumed one of us can score 8 points on the English test and can obtain a state nomination.

So have you worked out who will be main applicant? What are the occupations? Can either of you get state sponsorship, that is, which occupations is on the sponsorship lists?

Is that the CSOL. That part is quite confusing to me.

Also, please can I ask another question. On the 190 visa page, you score 15 points for a degree, and 10 points for an award recognized by the assessing authority. Can these be combined to make 25 points, or can I factor only one item out of this section?

Thanks.

You can only get one set of points for education / qualification. So if degree is your highest qualification you just get the 15 for that.

You need to take a good look at the SOL and CSOL and identify which list both of your occupations are on, that is why I asked what they are. I was going to look, but if you don't want to say then you need to do this yourself. You need to check that your occupations are on the same list, either SOL or CSOL, otherwise no partner points are available.

I would also suggest you need to check all the sponsorship lists, being on WA schedule 2 is not good, means you need a job offer as well, which is very difficult to organise without a visa, so catch 22.

My wife is currently a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Endocrinology. She's done various medical nursing roles including working as a community nurse.

I'm a Senior Cisco Network Engineer, but I don't think WA is currently accepting network engineers. Having said this, when I was in Perth a couple of weeks ago, I was pretty much offered a 457 at two separate places based on my CV and a face-to-face chat. Don't want to go down the 457 route though.

Forget about WA lists for the moment, just consider the occupation code your wife would apply under and what you would apply under and see if they are both on the CSOL or both on the SOL. I am trying to establish if you can get 5 points for partner visas first of all.

Thanks Rupert - you're being very helpful here.

SOL

Julie (wife) either 254411 or 254418

Me 263111

CSOL

Julie - same codes as above

Me - same code as above.

What's the difference between the SOL and the CSOL ?

Re-opening my old thread. I am delighted to report, that even in our late 40s, my wife and I have managed to obtain a 190 visa for our family, which includes 3 children.

We both have degrees and 10 years work in a professional capacity. We both obtained superior grade on the IELTS, and my wife managed to secure a role to obtain the final 5 points.

We're planning to arrive in Perth towards the end of July.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread.

Congratulations Chris. You are very lucky..Just went through the thread. I too applied for 190 in October and still waiting for a decision. How long did it take for you from the date of applying and which state? Thank you!

Thank You

We obtained state sponsorship from WA. My wife (a nurse), obtained a job offer (schedule 2) in March. We went through the EOI process, obtained state nomination, and lodged the visa application 6th April. We front-end loaded the application with medicals and police checks. 6 weeks later (to the day), on 18th May, we obtained the visas.

Hope this helps.
